Hello friends! How's everyone doing today?

So I currently would like some help, I currently have a FX-4100 but I plan to upgrade to something on the intel side such as a 6600k or a 6700k

I plan to go back to streaming, some photo editing, and video rendering (such as premiere and vegas)

So if you can, please help me out! Thanks! :)

I would go for the 6700k if it is budgetable. The higher clock speed by 500 Mhz does make a difference, especially if you have a good enough cooler to push that to 4.5 like I did mine.

Also the higher threads will be a good improvement in your streaming situation in case you are streaming newer AAA titles that have a CPU intensity such as Battlefield 1

6700k would be much better for all your tasks due to the extra threads.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

To expound a little more I would also recommend going ahead and getting the K series of whatever chip you get. Most motherboards support it now, aside from the budget of budgets ones, and so it is not going to hurt you by spending the $20-50 extra and getting the guaranteed best chip even if you do not overclock.

So for example, if I don't OC, would it be better to get a H170 motherboard instead of a Z170?

Yes and no. If you get an H170 motherboard it will support the 6700k but you loose the ability to overclock. Overclocking is the only real reason to get a K processor. A Z170 board will offer the overclocking potential, though overclocking isn't necessary if you don't want to dive into it right away.

If you don't plan to OC and want the best performance/price, I'd suggest going for a Xeon E3 V5 series instead...

Most of them will be cheaper than an i7 6700K but will have almost the same performance given the same clock speeds as explained by Linus here -

Positive -

Cheaper than i7

4 cores 8 threads - same as i7

Xeons are built for 24/7 usage

You get to be part of the elitist group within the elitist PC Master Race called the Xeon Master Race

Negative -

No overclocking for CPUs (Not that you wanted to overclock anyway)

No XMP (as far as I know)

Some of them don't have an IGP (not big of a deal if you're using discrete graphics.

I have an i5-6600K and have no problems whatsoever but I tend to look back and see if I should've gotten a Xeon instead...

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

Perfect! Thanks! The 6700k right now is on sale for 319 on amazon right now, so I think it's the great time to pick it up.

But I do a slight over clock, what kind of board would you recommend that's not breaking the bank from the Z170 chipset family?

Any Z170 board will do that fits your budget, color scheme, and pci-e slots requirements. You can get just a good of an overclock most of the time on a $150 board as you can a $300 one, unless you are trying to push the absolute max or put it under LN2.

Np, personally I stick with Gigabyte or Asus but as long as it's the right chipset then the rest is up to your own discretion.

This one from Asus (Z170-A) about $150 is one of the better ones that aren't expensive. I would've gotten this if it was widely available in my country...
