I made a post a few days ago asking about installing a new motherboard, and whether I should re install windows.  However I don't want to lose everything... so would upgrading to Windows 8.1 once I install the new board work?  Or is there any other way I could only repair install of Windows and not lose everything?

If you change chipsets (like from z68 to z77 or z87) you definitely need to re-install windows.

If you switch between say two Asus boards, you should be fine.

I am changing from the Asus P8Z77-V LX to the LK so ya the same pretty much

but be prepared to re-install if it doesn't work out.

Is there a way to do some kind of repair re install?  Also do I need to do anything before putting in the new motherboard?

Just a heads up if the mobos have the same chipset then you generally don't have to re-install windows. Assuming you activated windows over the internet your copy should still be activated, but if you activated manually over the phone there is a possibility you will loose your activation. I believe this is due to windows seeing a mismatched hask(checkscum) when the hardware was changed.

Yes it is the same.  Could someone answer please!  If I have to re install, is there a way to re install and not lose everything, backup, or repair install?

Repair install generally should work. If it doesn't though make sure you have a backup of your data.

EDIT: Seems you have found Brink's tut over at EightForums. They are all well written :D .

My motherboards will have different chipsets so i guess a clean install will be required, but is there a "refresh" option for windows 7 that might work? If not, how can i backup my programs and appdata and such?

If refresh doesn't work, couldn't I put back the old motherboard as it still works?

Yes. Although there is no refresh option on Windows 7. You will be forced into using a repair install.
