X99 motherboards are for socket 2011 CPUs such as the Haswell-E line. The i7-6700K is a socket 1151 CPU - you want a Z170 based motherboard.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

i5-6600, 16Gigs, ITX Corsair 250D, R9 390, 120Gig M.2 boot, 500Gig SATA SSD, no HDD

Ohhhhh, well would you recommend any CPU's? I think I should be able to switch out to a Intel Core i7 6800K, only thing is that its not as fast as the 6700K.

Why did you decide to switch to x99?

Because I thought it was a better motherboard than the one I picked before (Asus ROG Maximus Hero VII) and went better with the theme I want to do. I don't know if I should and I am a first time PC builder, so don't go crazy on me if I say something dumb. :)

But why that mobo? x99 and z170 in terms of performance make no difference. In fact a mobo won't make any difference

Frequency isn't everything. The 6700k might have a higher frequency, but the 6800k has 6 cores (12 threads) compared to 4 cores (8 threads). Additionally it has more pcie lanes, more cache and more RAM channels

Pick a motherboard that has the features you need. If you don't have any particular features you need, just get whatever works for your cpu. Usually, you look for the motherboard after deciding what cpu to go with since that is what decides the performance.

If you're planning a new system and would like some guidance, plan the system as a whole in the New Builds and Planning subforum instead of segregating the discussion.

In that case, read this first:
