For example:

I have a MOBO with 2 DIMM slots,

I buy one stick of 8gb corsair ram that is 2133mhz,

later I decide I need more ram,

I buy one stick of 8gb g.skill ram that is 2133mhz,

IS THIS SCENARIO OK?

You should match the CAS latencies and the voltage.Speed doesn't really matter, the speed will automatically lower to the lowest common speed. And size doesn't matter.

what is that?

It would say in the specifications, CAS latency is a set of 3 numbers, 9-9-24 is a CAS latency. And voltage ot would say, 1.5V is pretty common. Just check the spec sheets for the RAM.

so aslong they are both ddr4 it is ok? what is the frequency, is it the 2133mhz?

The voltages and the Latencies have to match. Ya thats the frequncy.

what is latency?

so far I understand:

they both have to be ddr4, they both have to be same frequencies e.g. 2133mhz.

is that correct^^

thanks for the help

Latency is a set of 3 numbers like 9-9-24. This has to match.

Voltage is in volts, for example 1.5 V is common, This also has to match.

Frequency should be matched.

They both have to be DDR4.

take a picture of your ram or send us some link

I would never recommend to use differend RAMs in your system. It's best if you can get identical rams.

Intel i7 12700K | Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR4 | Pure Loop 240mm | G.Skill 3200MHz 32GB CL14 | CM V850 G2 | RTX 3070 Phoenix | Lian Li O11 Air mini

Samsung EVO 960 M.2 250GB | Samsung EVO 860 PRO 512GB | 4x Be Quiet! Silent Wings 140mm fans

WD My Cloud 4TB

anyway, another question: What's the difference between notebook and desktop ram??

Are you afraid of buying a single/dual ram kit, and it going out of production in the future when you decide to upgrade again?
I don't think you should have any worries, especially not when looking at Corsair and/or G.Skill :)
Buy one/a set of those, and I'm sure they'll be available in 1-3 years still, at about the same price or lower :)

As others have pointed out, they wouldn't mix-match their ram; I don't have much (*cough* any) experience with this, but I've read the same as well while upgrading my own computer. And glancing over most of the different rams, they all seem to have different latency.
And about voltage: I'm not sure about other ram, but my corsair "needs"/wants 1.65v when using XMP - Mostly, others, will only need 1.5v if I'm not mistaking.

The main difference in Laptop and Desktop ram is the size, iirc - I'm not sure about the performance :)
I think they're labeled with an L, or something. Again I'm unsure (and I'm about to go out the door, so I can't check ^^).

thanks :D

The difference between laptop memory and desktop memory is physical size and its pin configuration.
That being said, you can't use laptop ram on desktop and the other way.
