Here's the Video Editing PC list I made for my friend. He'll be using Adobe Premier mostly. Since I don't know a lot about this, this is where you guys step in. Budget is $650, don't go over $700.

An aftermarket cooler is not needed for the 6500 unless he plans on base clock overclocking it. I don't think 16GB of ram is needed for video editing. That graphics card is low end for video editing. You could save $30 and get a mATX motherboard.

man, 16gb of RAM is a lifesaver when editing

premiere eats it right up, and final cut runs better as well

As for the video card, I think it's plenty powerful enough for CUDA acceleration. He's not going to be getting octane renders under two weeks, but it's adequate. 

 

One thing I might suggest is the addition of a higher core count CPU, such as an e3 xeon or an i7 6700

GPU doesn't matter much for premire, its mainly cpu.

 

You can easily go over 16gb, esp if you have photoshop and chrome running in the background.

 

Id probably get a 250gb ssd. 120 is a bit to small. Id probably also get a gtx 750

I'm not sure about using a DDR3 Xeon, is there a DDR4 Xeon that works the same?

yez but it'll be way over budget. don't worry about the older xeon, its only a measly 10% ipc improvement on the skylake compared to haswell.

Forgot to mention, he doesn't need any storage. Only a drive for the OS. He has a 3TB external drive that he carries around.

It's a decent build.

 

It's true that the cooler isn't required and is adding $20 to the total without any performance benefits, but if you hate the Intel stock cooler whether it's due to noise or due to the fact that it's pretty mediocre, then by all means get it. I'd personally get one, but if budget is tight, don't sacrifice another component for it.

 

The GTX 1050 Ti is decent, but good luck getting one for that price. As has what's happened with the other Pascal cards, they have sold out within days after launch. You may need to exercise patience here.

 

Make sure you have secondary storage if you're only limiting yourself to 120 GB. Professional software can be huge, leaving you with little room for anything else.

Thinking about mATX in ATX case, why not the smaller cousin of the same case, the SPEC-M2?

matx mobos will fit fine in atx cases, they have the same mounts.

This look good? Another question: how will it handle gaming? He's not going to be playing anything graphics heavy, and he rarely games, but just curious.

In that case just get the cheaper card, for render times the difference between the two will be less than 1% on most workloads.

 

With the 1050 Ti that's a total of $680

if he's not playing anything intensive, i'd recommend a gtx 1050 for $110 instead. otherwise its fine.
