If you only have 2 DIMM slots, yeah it'll work. You might see a slight performance hit but not bad, especially since he wont be gaming (i think)

DDR3 is generally good enough even in one channel. RAM speeds matter a lot less today than they used to.

And i don't think he needs an SSD for basic usage. Maybe an SSHD or just an fast 7200RPM HDD.

I actually disagree. every new PC should come with an SSD. the amount of random reads that normal usage incurs is too much for a HDD or SSHD. SSDs are simply better, and unless you are really strapped for cash, they are a must. My mom kept telling me her PC was slow until I put an SSD in there, and her PC is lightning fast now.

Im personally a big fan of SSD's :)
It may not be 'necessary', but speed is always nice. Also less likely to drop in speed.

And because he doesnt need a lot of space at all a 240gb ssd seems fine to me :)

thanks anyway

850 evo?

That's a phenomenal SSD if it fits in your price range.

Its not that he is on a budget, just trying to get a good value :)

And not like he is an advanced user that will notice/ use a lot of fancey functions

well any SSD will be better than a HDD, but for general usage, mid-range SSDs are fine, and the 850 EVO is pretty high-end as far as normal SSDs go (not counting Samsung PRO series SSDs)

change PSU, 8GB of RAM and thats basically it

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

My only suggestion is that you get 2x4Gigs of RAM. In this use case there's not much need to ever get more than 8Gigs so future upgrades aren't a concern. Meanwhile, the graphics portion of the  APU will benefit from dual-channel RAM access (and fast 1866 or better RAM).

P.S. My wife is happily running an A8-7600 with just a 120Gig SSD. I would normally use at least a 250 Gig SSD, but I had the 120 kicking around.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.
