Upgrade to Skylake

Go to solution Solved by Gonio,

You need a 1151 for skylake/kaby. And yes if you can wait a while for Kaby/Zen you should, is only 3-4 months I expect. Should lower the price, what is good for you. And you can go with boxed cooler for now as already mentioned before.

I am currently using a computer I made with an FX4300 (stock 3.8), 8 GB DDR3, and a 500W EVGA power supply. I would like some help. I want to upgrade to Skylake. With parts I have found from Amazon, I figure that I can get the required motherboard, CPU, and ram for around 200USD, is it worth it?

Your motherboard isn't a Skylake board.

https://www.amazon.com/ASRock-Motherboard-Micro-DDR4-H110M-HDS/dp/B019EOPC8W Is a skylake board, and is close to the same price as your current board, so it doesn't blow your budget out of the water.

Skylake requires a 100 series motherboard (H110, H170, B150, Z170). Plug your parts into pcpartpicker.com and select Amazon as your preferred seller. The stock intel cooler that comes with the CPU will do fine

Also Zen and Kaby lake are coming out in Q1 of 2017 so I'd wait to see what they offer.

Thanks! I didn't realise that it was 1150.
