I'm planning to build a budget nas/htpc for ~$500 US and I am a bit stuck on the power supply. I was thinking something like an evga 500B, but I have heard that seasonic has some decent budget units as well; any suggestions?

The 500B isn't awful but a Seasonic S12 is better.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

If you're on a really tight budget and not going to be doing anything too demanding, the EVGA 500W 80+ PSU is serviceable, but you can do a lot better. I don't recommend cheaping out on the PSU, especially when the CXM and M12II/S12II can both be had for around $50.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

I agree about not cheaping out on the psu; the 500B and equivelants are pretty much the limit of what I'm comfortable with in terms of quality. Cxm units seem to have some mixed reviews, so I think I want to go with one of the seasonics. What's the difference between the m12ii and the s12ii?

Some of those may be for the green CXM units, which are a bit older and crappier. The grey ones are actually quite decent, and you can get a 450 W one for $50 off of Newegg or $45 off of Amazon (with Prime).

If you want SeaSonic, the S12II has a bit more value than the M12II, as it costs less than the M12II, though it is non-modular unlike the M12II and CXMs (the CXMs are semi-modular). You can get a S12II 430B for $45 off of Newegg, or a 520B for $55.

You know what, I think you just convinced me to get the corsair. 40 bucks (after rebates and promos) for something decent and semi modular seems like a pretty good deal.

The CX450M for 40 dollars is a good deal. Go for it :)
