So i been using Ethernet for all my life, now that i did not pay wifi i was able to ask my neighbor for there password to use, and they gave me it just one small problem...my laptop can only catch wifi but not my desktop

So i'm looking to get a Wifi Adapter (Not a TP-LINK or anything expensive but those $4-6 ones)

So here are my questions :

1.Is it better to get a wifi adapter with a big antenna or does the small one in the adapter work as good? (USB)

2.Since my neighboor is about 15m away from me and on my laptop the wifi is good, so with a cheap adapter will i get also good speeds? (It can catch up to 150mbs,100m away)

The problem with USB adapters, is the power that USB delivers to them... at best it will be 1amp... which just doesn't provide much power.

Not only that, they got hot really quickly.  I'd highly recommend a PCI based solution.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

I don't mind heat allot, as long as it works for a good 2-4 years i'm happy

You didn't read what I wrote then, or you don't understand how heat and power works in the realm of electronics.

If you give a antenna 10 watts of power it will get x range and performance.  If you give it 20 watts of power, it will get 2x range and performance.

Not only that, heat will degrade the life of a product.  ASUS released a article a few years ago that says every 5 degrees Celsius under the rated temperatures will double the life of the product.

SO, heat kills the longevity (and typically performance) and USB cant give the adapter enough power to do more than just function.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Save money and make laptop and share laptop's internet with cable?

Like connect a Ethernet cable to my laptop and then the other end to my PC? I originally though about it but i did not know if it would work or how good the performance would be...

I do that all the time. The problem is the wifi (out of range maybe) and not mobility (you can't move laptop with those wires). No extra software needed even as it is implemented with Windows

OOOOOOOH, IDK ill try it out and if it is good enough ill save some cahs

I though about it but didn't think it will work...

Mobility is not the problem as my setup is bulky as it is and i don't plan on moving it

THANKS FOR THE TIP !

Man, you spending $5 isn't going to get you very far...  That adapter is better than almost any USB adapter, but I really think you should spend $30-40 to get something that is worth while.

Yea, your typical WiFi adapter in a notebook is somewhere in the $20-$25 range...

That coupled with the antenna is like 3 feet long.

Anyways, the pass through internet sharing isn't a bad option.  It can provide 90% of the raw performance easily, most of the time you'll be hitting in the 99% range.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Yeah the owner's router where I use is shit so I had to use this way. It can't use Ethernet but fine with WiFi
