Right now i use a modem/router provided by my isp. what happens if you change it out for a better one?

Performance wise, almost nothing, you normally save money.

Many of the newer isp routers have good AP's with 1300AC, cause good wifi = happy customers, and you can't upsell someone speeds if they can't use it on there laptop.
