When will we be able to truly run 4k?

HungryHamster

Hey everyone,

How many years away do you think we are from truly being able to play games at 4k resolution on max settings? I'm talking about 80-120FPS constant, not 30-70FPS like cards are capable of now. I don't think the 1080ti will make that big of an improvement, but I could be wrong. What are your thoughts?

Dual Titan XPs hover around 60FPS in a bunch of games at 4K, which I definitely classify as "able to play games at 4K". However the next generation of enthusiast cards should be able to do it (60+ FPS), im confident in that.

Yes because we were running fake 4K all the time. Technically 4k means 4000 but in reality it is 3840

It's not going to matter because at that point, you'll be wanting 8K max settings.

The funny thing is, to everyone here running 4K is ultra settings 60FPS xD We can run 4K just not max everything at 60FPS. Unless you have 2 XPs

That's understandable since it is pretty vague and subjective.

I guess I was trying to imply that I personally don't consider 30-70fps as playable like some people do since I mostly play First Person Shooters.

I think earliest, in the next year or two, but I'd say at least before the turn of the decade.

So at most, maybe 3 or 4 years?

Honestly though, I think by next year a 1080 successor or something from Vega would be able to play games at 4K.

Something to contribute now :3

According to Steam, 1080p is the most common resolution at ~37% of those surveyed.  Next is 1368x768 at ~25%. 1440p is about 10th in line. This basically means developers are probably going to optimize for 1080p. Or crank up the effects to keep the status quo of common resolution at 60FPS.

So until higher resolutions become more common place,  I don't see developers caring about targeting them.

That's for PC, though. 4K TV's will become much more common next year for console gaming.

Developers will aim for 30FPS most of the time on consoles,  which 4K 30FPS won't really be standard if you will until the next generation.

Budget your settings, and you can play 4K right now if you want to. Generally speaking, there is little difference between the highest setting and the second highest setting in terms of visual appeal. Performance impact however, is almost always very significant going from the second highest to the highest. More so than going from lowest to medium.

Generally speaking. There are of course certain settings, and certain titles that differ from the above.

Motherboard: Asus X570-E
CPU: 3900x 4.3GHZ

Memory: G.skill Trident GTZR 3200mhz cl14

GPU: AMD RX 570

SSD1: Corsair MP510 1TB

SSD2: Samsung MX500 500GB

PSU: Corsair AX860i Platinum

If the next lineup of GPUs make the same jump in performance that pascal did, then the 1180 (working title) will be a 4k 60fps card and the Titan X+ will be a 4k 100+

CPU: I5 4590 Motherboard: ASROCK H97 Pro4 Ram: XPG 16gb v2.0 4x4 kit  GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970 PSU: EVGA 550w Supernova G2 Storage: 128 gb Sandisk SSD + 525gb Mx300 SSD Cooling: Be Quiet! Shadow Rock LP Case: Zalman T2 Sound: Logitech Z506 5.1 Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma Keyboard: DBPower LED

That is an interesting statistic,  you can run the majority of the most popular multiplayer and indie games at 1368x768 on a Dual-Core i3 and Intel HD Integrated Graphics or relatively similar hardware.

The only popular titles on Steam that require mid-range hardware are Grand Theft Auto V and the Bethesda titles but even they are relatively well optimized. I thought Virtual Reality could push hardware sales long term for enthusiast tech but with consoles offering HDR and virtual reality, many consumers will just pay a few hundred instead of spending thousands on a custom built machine for the latest Virtual Reality or HDR experience.

4K at 120 FPS? I'd say a few years, we're not THAT far

But it's set to become a heck of a lot more common very soon. You can be sure that developers will be "targeting" this new trend.

Well here is the thing.... True 4K gaming is more than likely farther away than we think because as hardware gets better, so do the games. So... The hardware makes a nice jump in performance but 2-3 years later BOOM the next Crysis comes out and makes mince meat of the current GPU. So I don't think we will get there as soon as we think. Honestly it won't ever happen IMO.... based on how long we have been at 1080p. We are barely past Ultra 1440P let alone $1300 GPU's running "games" at 4K.  We are really talking about affordable 4K not even enthusiast level 4K. AWHILE!
