It's a method (algorithm) of encoding bits of information to go on telephone lines between your modem in your house and the modem at the ISP side, using frequencies above the frequencies normally used for voice.

 

It stands for "asymmetric digital subscriber line 2+"  (asymmetric because download and upload bandwidth are not equal) and you can read more about adsl here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymmetric_digital_subscriber_line
