RAID USB memory as RAM??

Sooooo, here I am for the 1st time on LTT forum. Weee^^

Here is my story,I am the a slave of an old motherboard Asrock G31m-S.I updraged my cpu with an Xeon 5450,but what about RAM?? 

This is the point ,I have only 2 memory slots,and 2x2 gb ram in it.Its very hard to find module of 4 gb for old Intel MB.

I read a lot of about using USB flash memory as RAM.But what about if we use more usb moduls in RAID and then use it as RAM??? I mean is it works? What perfomans can I expect,in real games? Did any1 try this?Linus can you do episode about this litle experiment?

 

Its much easyer to buy Z170 ,6700k and bunch of memory DDR4 but ..but..you know..its my very old fauvor pc.We all have one.. right? ;-)

DDR2 RAM can't be that hard to find. Look at your local used listings, im sure people are pulling that off old servers like no body's business

USB is molasses slow compared to DRAM speeds. A typical flash drive may have the same performance as a hard drive. Even if you get something akin to an external SSD, it's no where near DRAM speeds. You're look at least 10x slower in transfer rate and 1000x slower in latency. And that's not including the USB overhead.

Yeah, I think you should be able to find 4GB DDR2 sticks easily on ebay. It might be a tad expensive, but it should be there. I even have a old Core 2 Duo board which is just laying with 4x1GB DDR2 around because it's not worth it to use...

As seen in the following Wikipedia article on ReadyBoost, USB RAM drives stop being useful as soon as you have more than 1GB of real RAM.

HowToGeek's article on 10 Windows Tweaking Myths Debunked also shares the same opinion.

Besides, if this system has a Xeon CPU, you should be running real resources to feed the Xeon.
