Choosing a Mechanical Keyboard for Work

MikeS159

I am an engineer, so I spend a lot of time at a computer programming and writing documents.

I am looking to get a mechanical keyboard at work to replace the horrible rubber dome one that came with my computer. I have a Logitech G910 at home, my preference is towards switches with a tactile bump but not super clicky (so nothing like the MX Blues) as I don’t want to have a loud keyboard in the office. The main problem I am coming across is finding a decent mechanical keyboard without all the gimmicky gaming keyboard features. RGB LEDs and loads of macro keys are fine at home, but people would start asking questions at work why I am spending loads of money on OTT keyboards. However it does need: media keys, standard UK layout and a number pad.

 Preferably

it should be available off Amazon because getting anything through ‘a non-approved supplier’ is a massive pain, and that is the only one with any decent choice. (I am aware of the code mechanical keyboard, but its not available on Amazon L - https://codekeyboards.com/)

sounds like you need CherryMX Brown switches with O-rings so that it's as quiet as possible while still feeling good.

As for keyboards, I honestly haven't payed attention to much for a while. I got a G710+ a long time ago and I'm still happy with it

Yeah, browns sound like the best bet, but finding them on a non-gaming keyboard is hard...

I actually just picked up the Rosewill RK-9000 v2 with the brown switches. Very subtle keyboard with a nice tactile feel. Only thing is the PCB for the keyboard is orange which for me was a nice step away from all black and made it feel different without any of the loud LED keyboards out there

It sounds like you want a Das Keyboard professional: https://www.amazon.com/Das-Keyboard-Professional-Mechanical-DASK4MKPROCLI/dp/B00JG01QTY/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1476392155&sr=1-2&keywords=das%2Bkeyboard&th=1

Very clean design, no ridiculous lights, and Cherry MX Brown switches. This is the US version but I am sure you could find a UK layout on your local amazon.

You can turn the LEDs off on some keyboards.

  • 2 weeks later...

I went for a Logitech G610 Orion Brown in the end, it looks normal enough to be in a office. Cherry MX Brown switches are pretty nice, and I've had a few jealous looking co-workers.
