How bad is using a motherboard without the heatspreader?

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Honestly though, how hot could something like that actually get, because if it's anything like RAM, it works fine with no heat spreader

Under normal operation with a heatsink the chipset gets to about 40-50C. Your GPU will really heat it up. Anything under 65C is always fine but beyond that all bets are off. I'd say without the heatsink and your GPU at full blast you're looking at a matter of seconds before a burnout.

True. the only exception I can think of is RAM. most good models come with a heat spreader, but the RAM runs totally fine without a heat spreader. I was thinking that maybe the same logic applies here, because heat spreaders don't really dissipate heat effectively, and maybe this was mostly for looks. I realize now that it actually serves an important purpose.

Some cheap pre built pcs don't even include heat sinks on the PCH to save money, they are safe to run at 80c but it could shorten the lifespan ideal temperature is 60c and lower boot it up and monitor the temperatures.

Why cant you mount it? Get some thermal adhesive. apply to chip. apply heatsink to the now sticky ship and let it set/dry. you now have a glued on heatsink gg.

 

If you have a broken screw, its reasonably easy to find a replacement at a hardware store. if you have a stripped heatsink, get a longer screw (making sure you're not going to puncture anything important)

alright. just to clarify, with thermal adhesive, I wouldn't need to use screws to mount the heat spreader?

It's safe up to about 90C, IIRC. You can try attaching it with some TIM and PCB-safe adhesive.

I mean it depends just how heavy the heatsink is and just how good the adhesive is.... but my guess would be no.. I don't think those  heatsinks are going to be heavy enough. that being said I wouldn't shake the case or jar the motherboard around or anything like that to make it feel more inclined to fall off ;P

You could ALSO buy a different heatsink and attach it the same way. something smaller and lighter if you find that your stock heatsink is just too heavy to work with this mounting method.

Arctic silver says that "Arctic Alumina Thermal Adhesive is a permanent adhesive. Components you attach with Arctic Alumina Thermal Adhesive will
stay attached forever. " so i think it's safe to say that a heat spreader weighting less than 150 grams will stay attached for a good while.
