Paging file weirdness??

So I was running a RAMDisk with my TEMP directories because I was on just an SSD and wanted to minimize writes to it (it's only rated for 30TBW too). But just yesterday I got my replacement HDD back and so I undid the RAMDisk.

 

Here's the thing. I made the amazing decision to put a paging file on the RAMDisk while I had it running. I know, not my brightest moment. Ever since I undid the RAMDisk I get this error on boot

 

And then it takes me to the manage paging file window. So what the fuck gives? How do I fix this?

 

Yes I am on a fresh Windows 10 install.

The writes won't kill the drives. There isn't much written to TEMP. Don't worry about the writes on a ssd.

 

Is the page file set to default?

 

Try turning it off and se what you get.

I forgot to mention I already tried setting it to default and also tried no paging file. No dice.

Make the RAM disk again just like you did before. Then undo the pagefile that you set on it before undoing the RAM disk?

Ok so I clicked on let windows manage the paging file again and it didn't show up now. Perhaps the setting is fixed, I will try customizing the paging file again.

Unless you have those first gen SSDs, writes should not be a concern anymore. SSDs write limitation is long gone, even if you buy cheapo ones.

All posts, articles, etc. on it, are no longer relevant. Defrag your SSD weekly if you want, it will pass 7 to 9 years easy. By then you'll probably switch to another SSD, with some newer technology like PCIe SSD, or/and larger or/and faster drives.

 

RAMDisk doesn't provide performance improvement either... well.... beside in benchmarks and specific scenarios.

 

So remove RAMDisk, and enjoy your SSD.

Yeah I don't think I'll keep the RAMDisk around, and the issue seems to have been fixed.

The only time I've found a RAM disk to give a benefit was with games using iGPU. And even then it was only about 8 frames to the usual 30.

That's outdated. There's nothing wrong with it.

You still don't defrag SSDs, you trim them, which windows will do automatically.

 

OP: your page file must always be on a physical drive. It's not only virtual memory but also the place Windows uses in the event of a crash or memory error. If you don't have a page file on your C drive you risk permanently corrupting Windows if something goes wrong.
