Ok I have the 3570K with a p8z77-m pro. I turned off all turbo, and just have it running stock at 3.4GHz. VID goes to about 1.18 under load and Max Core Temps are 56C under load. Problem is, I play Far Cry 3 and I can play fine at like 50-60fps for the first 5 minutes, then the screen goes black, comes back on and its like I have like 20 fps and also right after the screen goes black my external hard drive is no longer accessible, like, its just not there, no more (E) drive, I have to unplug it(makes a sound that it was disconnected) and replug it back in to make it work again. My last computer was a holly2 motherboard with an a6-3650 and I never had problems playing Far Cry 3 with it except that it bottle necked my Video Card which is why I upgraded. I have everything at stock settings and this is still happening, and I know it isnt the game, I have played it for hours on the other computer with the same Video card and same Graphics drivers. Everything is the exact same except the processor and motherboard.

Specs:

i5 3570K 3.4Ghz

p8z77-m pro

Windows 7 Home

8GB DDR3 1600MHz 240 pin

660TI Superclocked Edition (+78MHz)

900W/1000W Peak PSU (Plan on another 660TI and used to have water cooling in my last rig)

Just ran prime95 for 4.5 hrs and it was fine at 100% load, no errors or warnings... where as Far Cry 3 dies in 5 minutes. What is odd is that my max temp from prime95 is 70C... Running at 3.4GHz. Im almost certain thats not normal...?

If you overclocked it, I would at least run P95 on blend for at least 12 hours to ensure that your cpu is stable.

What cpu cooler are you using? Did you try cleaning the dust in your cooler, reseating your cooler and reapplying your thermal paste? There might be air bubbles in the thermal compound.

Link to Linus' video in reseating your cooler:

Just reseated the cooler, unplugged everything and replugged it back in and ran memtest for 5 hours. no problems there. now im gonna do prime95 for 12 hours. i found out that high temps are normal on prime95 cuz it runs your cpu like nothing else. Hopefully I can figure out why Far Cry is being a little b**** cuz i really wanna play it. ;) thank for the help, will keep updating. Any ideas are welcome keep giving me some.

Your video card is the problem, RMA it.

70C on your 3570K is fine. I assume you're using the stock box cooler.

Also... VID is different from Vcore. VID is how much Voltage the chip is requesting, Vcore is how much it is getting. It could be requesting 1.18V but really only needing 0.9V. Make sure you always set the voltage your chip needs!

3D mark vantage ran with no problems.

3D mark 11 ran with no problems.

Unigine Heaven ran with no problems.

Furmark ran with no problems.

OCCT error checking ran with no problems.

Last but not least CPU, then I have nothing else I can think of after this...

** I just reseated the cooler using DYNEX and the 660ti is EVGA. I will order the icy diamond but for now this is what I have. If I get errors on Prime95 I will wait til I get the icy and retest.

Thank you for the VID/Voltage explanation - it helps a lot.

**What are DRAM, PCH, VCCSA and CPU PLL Voltage supposed to mean? Should these be bumped for 4223MHz?

Right now its set as:

DRAM- 1.500

PCH- 1.050

VCCSA- auto

CPU PLL- auto

ok I have figured out the problem (kinda). I went to the NVidia control panel and turned all stuff to off or performance and Far Cry seems to work great (knock on wood ::clunk::) I will change each setting and figure out the setting it was, or try to. Thank for all the help guys.

Is the 660ti a msi card? Those were pretty messed up by msi: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/MSI-GTX-660-670-overvolting-PowerEdition,18013.html

If you can read German check out that version. It is way longer and a lot more details. Pretty interesting read!

Thank you, its an evga. I also found out its the game... none of my settings or hardware. It is what it is. I ran benchmarking tests for about 8 hrs on my video card striaight. MSI and EVGA OCX were ran at the same time for 8 hours and they ran fine, one on each of my monitors. Furry-tessy. Its the game. :/
