Upgrading to 6600k from 6500

I recently found out that I paid a premium for a Z series motherboard when I don't have an unlocked CPU. I was wondering how much I could sell my i5 for and if it is worth upgrading to the 6600k.

A lot of hassle for a few frames a second, just depends if you need the extra performance or not.

You could probabbly get $150USD for it, so you are probabbly going to pay another $70-$80USD net total for the 6600k.

You can get a none k oc bios and overclock locked chips. In fact one of my 6500 overclocked higher than my 6600k.

Unless you had like something around  1070/980 ti then no.

save up for an i7-7700K instead...that's a true upgrade...or at least an i7-6700K.

By the time you sell the i5-6500 at a loss, buy the 6600K, and buy a cooler capable of a worthwhile overclock, you will certainly have lost far more money than you already did by buying a Z170 motherboard.

 

You can try memory overclocking if you really want to, since I think you need Z170 for that as well, but I'd only recommend overclocking anything if you actually enjoy doing it. Don't do it because you think you have to or that you'll get some massive performance benefit from it.

Idk about that.  I have used 3 different boards and 8 cpus including 6 on phase cooling and they have all been fine.

What clock frequency should I expect on a stock cooler if I do this method?

the stock cooler? erm you probably shouldnt use that at all., you would have to buy a cooler for the 6600K so i would buy an aftermarket one. i didnt even use the stock cooler on pentium G4400's tbh, its really really bad.  On a decent single tower air cooler with a 120mm you should be able to get 4.4ghz easy and i got over 4.7ghz out of one of mine and 4.6ghz out the other. my 6600 none k was a bit slower and only did 4.55ghz, but thats still ok.

What cooler do you recommend for a 4.0-4.4 OC on my CPU?

something like a cooler master hyper 212 evo would be fine. there are loads of good air cooler out there, thermalright, Raijintek, deepcool, alpenfohn, Prolimatech, Cryorig. anything with 4-6 heatpipes and a decent 120-140mm fan should be fine.
