I have a problem. Do I go use a 21:9 display or a 4k? I have a computer that can run both and I have heard and seen good aspects of both but do not know which to go for. Does anyone know which is truly better for casual gaming and suggest a good monitor for the winner?

I chose ultrawide over 4K because of the extra size. Only time I would upgrade monitors again is if and when they bring out an ultrawide 4K 100hz+ monitor.

Well first off whats your GPU? If your going 4k your going to need a GPU capable of running it at that native resolution. The GTX 1080 currently marks at 45-55 FPS with most titles maxed out at that resolution. Your also constrained to 60hz as there aren't any 4k monitors that go above 60hz (At least currently).

Ultra-wide offers much higher refresh rates, and you can find good monitors for 1440p - 144hz, which looks great, again as long as you have the GPU to support it.

Now when you say for just casual gaming, that made me laugh a little because I wouldn't categorize either of those options as "casual". As a casual gamer getting a solid IPS 1080P monitor would be a better overall option.

I would rather agree on what we share, than fight on what we don't. - Myself

I am getting the Asus 1080 strix OC.

Go Ultrawide. Even 1080s can't sustain 60fps at max at 4K, but on a 1440p UW it will be very smooth

what about the LG 34UM88C-P vs LG 31MU97-B 31IN 4K

i currently have a LG 34UM68-P 34IN which is 2560 x 1080 an been looking for a second monitor possibly using the ultrawide for its 3440 x 1440 for gaming, an the old 34 inch for media/movies etc. my main focus for games are mmorpgs, I don't play any fps games,  i'm running a 980 ti. I'm quite sure that can handle either monitor I pick, but would it be worth me paying the extra 500$ for the 4k vs ultrawide.
