Minecraft terrain generation question

I remember back in the day you could go through a desert and find a dungeon at surface level, is this still possible? Also if there is any major structure generation changes please let me know as I am playing the latest snapshot and haven't played since 1.6 (lmao)

Mojang has a changelog of all the different snapshots and such that are publicly accessible, you might be able to find information there.

 

I haven't done much with newer versions of minecraft past 1.7.10, and even then I haven't done too much with them since around 1.5 or 1.6. (I've been on 1.2.5 for quite a while, the Tekkit Classic modpack still remains as my favourite.)

Yeah it's still possible, I've found some in 1.9 iirc.

It's possible but far less likely in more recent versions in my experience due to some tweaks to how caves spawn
