Thoughts or experience with 1080 GTX @ 144hz 2560x1080

SimplyPsyke

Easily, my roommate has a 2560x1440 display with a 4790 and GTX 1080, he gets nearly 144 fps at all times in AAA titles like the Witcher 3 and GTA5. I don't even think a 1070 would dip below 60hz at that res, as the 1070 is better than the 980ti of the previous generation. IMO 1080 is overkill even for 1440p.

The 1080 is a powerful card. I have seen a video where at 2560x1440, they get 144fps with a 1070.

You'll get an appreciable bit more FPS than the GTX 1080 in these benchmarks does:

But neither a 1070 or 1080 gets anywhere near 144 FPS in graphically-intensive games at 1440p. A GTX 1070 doesn't get 60 FPS in graphically-intensive games at 1440p, unless settings are turned down a bit.

OP, since the resolution of the monitor that you're planning to buy is less than full 1440p, you'll get higher performance than 1440p benchmarks, and a GTX 1080 will like do well, though still not 140+ FPS in graphically-intensive games, with settings maxed.

I actually just got that same monitor and a 1080GTX ~ a week ago. Have no issues running games in ultra, although you will not hit 144hz consistently on ultra settings in games like BF4, GTAV, ect.

OP can you give us what games you will be playing?? As to get constant 144fps at those resolutions does ask quite a lot from a gpu???

On the lighter end of things:
World of Warcraft
TF2

Both of which are less concerning for sure.

Higher end I'm looking at:
FFXIV
Battlefield 1
Mafia 3

Total War: Warhammer
Civ VI
GTA V
ARK Survival Evolved

Probably will look into more games when I upgrade as having been stuck on a low-end card so long I've not looked into too many games outside of what I can already run.

Well if you are going too run those AAA titles at those resolutions at ultra then you will need maybe 2 1080 in sli cause 1440p gaming at 144hz is quite intense esp when you have some heavily rendered scenes in games.
