GTX 1070 + 4K Monitor or GTX 1080

Go to solution Solved by roylapoutre,

The 1080 cannot run all games maxed out @4k right now. It will be worse over time as new games tend to be more and more demanding. Yes it would be much better than a 1070 for 4K, but not ideal. Why not a 1440p monitor ? Coupled with a 1070, it's an excellent choice. And a lot more affordable :P

Hi,

I currently own 2 monitors, 1080p@60Hz and 1080p@144Hz. I run both off my GTX 970. However, I'm planning on upgrading my graphics card. I'm not sure what will benefit me in the long run, a GTX 1070 and a 4K monitor or just a GTX 1080. I've never experienced '4K', only 2K (my phone display). I don't game much but when I do game (i.e. in my spare time when I'm bored), I want to run my games at max settings. If I get a 4K monitor, I know GTX 1070 isn't capable of doing 4K@60FPS so I'd lower the settings to low/medium to try and get close to 60, if not, run games at 1440p on it. This is my reason for being more inclined towards GTX 1070 + 4K monitor, however I'm not sure if it's worth it in the long run getting a GTX 1080 instead.

Note 1: My GTX 970 is able to run games at high settings at 144FPS, but I get thermal throttling as it reaches 80C and stays there, causing random stuttering.

Note 2: I mainly do programming and configuration stuff + work + internet browsing, so that's why 2 monitors benefits me greatly right now. I'm able to watch a video on one screen and do programming on my main monitor.

you are better off with a 1080 if you do not game a lot. That way down the road when you can afford it again you can get a 4k screen and be able to make your 1080 work like a charm.

you can go with the gtx 1070 & 4k monitor.....if you will not be satisfied with the performance then you can buy another 1070 for sli config that gives much better performance than a gtx 1080 at 4k. (if budget is not a problem)

I agree. That is the perfect answer.

Like roylapoutre said go for that or couple together a 1070 and an ultra wide monitor :)

Right, thanks guys =) If my budget supports it, I'll get GTX 1070 and a 4K monitor, but if not, I'll get GTX 1070 and a 2K monitor rather than just a GTX 1080.
