I would say unless you have a degree in computer science, programming for games or another related subject you're going to find it nigh on impossible to even get started.

Have you actually tried using a games engine to see just how complex they are

If anyone here could tell you, we wouldn't because we wouldn't be middle-class ppl sitting in front of a computer, we'd be living in a huge mansion in Beverly hills drinking champagne and hitting on girls. Creating a game engine takes an extreme amount of work and even for a huge company like ubisoft, takes more than a year with hundreds of employees for a more sophisticated one. If you were to do it yourself, you would need to learn tens of languages and thousands of frameworks. It would take at least 10 years if it's a one man show to learn everything and another 3 to actually build it at that point, it will be heavily out dated and you will have spent your life doing nothing and die lonely.

Let's be real, even if you have a degree in software engineering and a masters in game design, it'd still take years and you won't make any money at all. It;s not worth the time kid

How do we create games then?

You learn how to program - command line js, objective c, sql, ruby on rails (for back-end) no sql, swift, python, c sharp, c plus plus, visual basic and maybe .NET

There is a reason why successful games that aren't indie style have 20 - 100 devs making them
