I can tell you now that 8GB of pretty much any speed is where significant differences in performance will stop for the vast majority of games.

8GB is the standard for gaming. Having more helps you out but higher speed does not (by an appreciable amount).

Yes 8GB is plenty, put 4GB in one slot and the second in the other channel slot. So buy 2x4GB, then you have room to expand and add another 4GB or 8GB to make it 12GB or 16GB. Of course depending if you got 4 slots.

I did hear of a game, the name escapes me, where you could literally strap rockets to planets and fling them into other planets to destroy your opponents. I've heard RAM usage can exceed 16GB in huge games but you're right, @Oshino Shinobu, 8GB is a pretty decent amount for 95% of the games out there. For the other 5%, you can up it to 16GB if you're feeling frisky.

If you have 2 slots on your mobo, please get 1x8GB stick. If you have 4 slots, get 2x4GB. That way you can upgrade later if you need.

Very few right now. Games that are very physics and CPU heavy will tend to use more RAM.

Sounds kind of like Universe Sandbox² but don't think it's the one you're talking about.

Universe Sandbox² can get pretty RAM hungry from what I know. As @Stylized_Violence said, Planetary Annihilation may be one. I have no experience with that game, though, so I can't confirm.

Games will use as much as you have if needed. These games have rather large areas that require faster loading than what a GPU or HDD can handle. Having more will help but 8GB is the standard at the moment.

Was going to post this, looks like someone beat me to it

 

The only instances I've seen that use more than 8 GB regularly is if you have a web browser with lots of tabs open running a game that will use 8 GB by itself. Even if you don't have more than that it will run fine, it will just be slow alt tabbing. This is from experience as one of my other systems only had 4 GB of RAM and would run GTA with several chrome tabs open. It took about a minute to alt tab though.

 

The only game that I've seen eat through all of the systems RAM was a guy who was playing BF1 beta and hit a memory leak that was apparently present in the DX11 version. BF1 managed to eat through 32 GB of RAM in just under an hour.
