ISP says using the internet is like eating Oreos

Mira Yurizaki

I don't understand the incessant need for ridiculously fast internet or the worry about data caps.

I consider myself a pretty heavy internet user. Sure, not as heavy as those people who stream netflix 24/7, but still, moderately heavy.

I have a simple 30 mb/5 mbit internet connection. This is plenty fast enough to support 4 college kids probably all streaming netflix/youtube at the same time. Last month we used 0.5 TB of data (download). (I'm the network admin... well I own the router and have the traffic meter turned on. ;) ) That LARGE amount was only because I bought a bunch of (massive) games on steam (and other services) and downloaded them all then. (Doom, fallout, far cry 3 and 4, wolfenstein) Our average monthly download usage is 16 GB.

I don't understand how people could be using TB of data for personal use. Are you streaming 1080p 24/7 while downloading every torrent you can find? The only way I managed 500 GB is because I was downloading massive games at 3ish MByte/sec.

Easy, replace watching traditional TV broadcasts with streaming over the internet. I manage around 250-300GB a month primarily from streaming videos so 2 or 3 people who have "cut the cord" could easily push around 1TB a month.
