Sata 3 6GBps

What is the limiting factor in Sata 3. Can it go any faster with firmware updates etc, beyond 6 Gbps (Gigabits per second)? Why haven't drives changed to sata express connections?

No it cannot go faster with updates, the limiting factor almost every time is the drive itself which can't saturate the link. A good SSD can do 500MB/s which is only 4Gb/s and a regular hard drive only pushes maybe 1Gb/s

Ahh ok. So what was sata express which is good for 4Gigabytes per second (if im correct, i believe this is right) made for then?

No, updates cannot help it since its hardware not software

Well thats why NVME drives show up, more speed possible. Will probably be mainstream in a couple of years.

It is a technology limitation and sata 3 will never be faster than 6Gbps.

Sata express was a failure, 0 drives exist that can use it.

 

NVME is what is replacing sata, using the U.2 connector or PCIe or M.2.

Actually ssds have been bottlenecked by sata for a long time. There are overheads in every protocol so 550MBs is the max you can get from sata3.

The solution has been m.2 up to 2,500MBs weirdo so far with the same flash as sata drives.

Ok. In SATA 3 is it the port or the cable that is limiting?

Fair enough. Where will see mass consumer storage go next when drives get faster do you think? How will we be connecting majority of our drives? PCIe? eSata?

SATA wasnt meant for SSDs since no such thing existed in 2003.
SATA Express seemed like the way to go but manufactures decided not to make that many sata express drives.(so rip sata express)

NVMe aka M.2 Drives are getting more popular each year so expect that to be the new standard. I dont think they will bother making sata 4 or whatever(last version is 3.2)

NVME drives. Is either M.2 or PCI. SInce PCI is here to stay think both will stay around.
