Best Linux Distro?

I want to know what's the best Linux distro for a newbie - on a laptop

Most would say the easiest to use are Ubuntu or Mint, but as Ernest_L says it depends on what you need. If you just want to mess around, I would personally go with one of the two I mentioned. My favorite is Ubuntu.

i'm very much learning Linux myself at the moment, but i've been using Linux Mint and the normal Ubuntu. they are pretty nice to just learn the basics in.

xubuntu is  a pretty simple and light distro

Depends a bit on your hardware aswell.

But i would say Ubuntu Mate or Linux Mint.

I hate this question (even though it is a reasonable one for a newbie), because it really has no good answer, because everybody learns differently, and everybody has different needs. In general, I'd say that beginners should start out on Ubuntu, one of Ubuntu's flavors, or Linux Mint. Once you've used it for a while and feel comfortable, distro-hop to something a little more advanced like Debian, Manjaro/Antergos, or Fedora. Where you go from there is your choice.
