Graphics card overheating

Not all thermal compound is the same.

The difference is on the chip, not the cooler.

Ceramic just isn't designed to work on the bare chip, bud.

So I got a sapphire r9 270x and I figured I would redo the thermal paste because it was a few years old and wasn't the coolest card. After I reapplied it I was playing and decided to check my temperatures and it got up to 90c playing battlefield 4 when I noticed it so I quickly shut it off and thought maybe I applied it wrong. I took the heatsink off again cleaned it with cotton swabs and 70% iso alcohol and used a pea sized or slightly smaller amount of arctic alumina by arctic silver and put it back together and half tightened all the screws then went in a star pattern to get an even pressure over the heat sink. No luck in under a minute it still ramps up to 90c. I have this in a dell optiplex 9010 case and I thought oh maybe the case has poor airflow so I wired in an intake fan on the front of the case and the rear fan as an exhaust and still no change. Any ideas?

Also forgot my thermal paste isn't that new. I bought it in 2014 and have had it sitting in a toolbox for almost all that time.

GPUs generally need more TIM than CPUs. Did you put enough on the card? Also did the TIM have a a cure time? Some have to have 24 hours to set up.

what abour the fan speeds on the card? is it ramping up at all ? , and try running w/ the sidepanel off and see if it makes a difference , that will answer the case question

I have a 280x, they really do make some hot air. 

Arctic Alumina is ceramic, Arctic Silver is silver. The reason it doesn't work is that the ceramic is designed to work with cpu heat spreaders, and graphics cards just don't have them. Find a GPU-specific thermal paste to use.

Yes the fans ramp up to 100% under load of furmark or battlefield when it gets too hot. And I did test with the side panel off didn't really make a difference just prolonged the heat up process

I think I put enough is pea sized not enough? And I don't see on the product page anything about cure time so not sure.

Yeah getting a lighter TIM might help. I like Arcitic MX-2, it is good for CPUs and GPUS.

He is talking about the heat spreader not the heat sink. It is the thing on the CPU itself. (The silver top that GPUs don't have)

Not all thermal compound is the same.

The difference is on the chip, not the cooler.

Ceramic just isn't designed to work on the bare chip, bud.

I agree here I think I just reapplied it pretty heavily and it made little to no difference. Just gonna wait for my mx-4 and try again.
