Just finished my build! Looking to overclock now,  I have never overclocked before. Ever.

I had some uqestions before I do it :

I know you get blue screens while doing it, any chance ATALL of me putting a stupid voltage in and breaking the CPU or MOBO?

I have a MSI Gaming M5 motherboard and an i7 6700k. My h100i is keeping temperaturess phenomally low - i'm idling at 15-20 degrees. How far can I clock this thing? I'm thinking 4.5?

So, all that's left, how the fuck do I do it? I know you can do htrough bios but can I do it thorugh MSI afterburner? What do I have to look out for?

Also, I know it reducdes the life of the CPU, bumt it will last 5 years correct ?

what cooler do you have?
anyway dont go above 1.4V and prefeably not above 1.35V start at 1.25V or something and see how far you can push it, run AIDA 64 for 10mins to stress test your CPU to make sure its fine and make sure temps dont go above 85C prefeably.  they guide posted above probably tells you just about all you need to know to be honest tho, theese are just some things i cant remember if they are mentioned, havent watched the video in a while

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

I do agree with you earlier, also it would help if the OP would post cooler specs, because there will be a huge difference if its air cooled or liquid cooled.

I don't mean to sound sarcastic, but didn't I post the cooler specs? It's an h100i V2 in an h440 case, 4 stock fans ( 3 intake, 1 exhaust ) with the AIO mounted on top exhausting.

As a noob to overclocking, is it risky? If I put in a bad voltage or  base/core clock would I damage the CPU or MOBO?

Thanks for replies!

When I started to OC. I was on my FX 6300. I OC it to 4.8 GHz and I thought I was good. I  never ran any benchmarks or stress test at all........ long story short I screwed up on 1 core. OC can be very good and VERY punishing. Linus has a full guide on how to OC in general which I recommend you watch just to get an idea on how you are going to OC. As long as you start small and work your way up you will be fine. I do stress that you run a stress test for extended periods of time (a good over night) to really make sure that your OC is good.

It is risky. As long as you have patience and take it slow, you won't kill anything. However, if you just go to the BIOS, and type in the max voltage, you can cause severe damage.

If you type in a multiplier or clock, your PC will just bluescreen. If it fails to post, you can reset the BIOS by resetting the CMOS. That doesn't have much danger. But do take it slow, go in 100-200 MHz increments. and add vCore bit by bit.
