GTX 1070 vs GTX 1070 G1 For 1080p

Sparky862

Okay, I finally have enough money to purchase either Gigabyte GTX 1070 OR Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 Gaming, but before I do, i want to confirm a few things I am unsure of.

1. I only game at 1080p, would the GTX 1070 be capable of maxing games out on 1080p?? Or should I go for the G1 to be safe??

2. My PSU is a 620WATT Antec Neo Eco. Will it be enough to power a GTX 1070 or GTX 1070 G1??

http://www.takealot.com/antec-neo-eco-620w-psu/PLID29396189

3. My PC specs are as follow

I7 3770k (Not OC)

8GB DDR3 RAM

Gigabyte Z77X-UP7 - Intel Z77 Motherboard

Will those specs go well with a GTX 1070 or GTX 1070 G1?? Wont there be any bottlenecking or something else holding me back??

Well you could even power a 144Hz panel with a 1070 on 1080p. So nothing to worry about. The normal 1070 should be fine, no need for the G1 Gaming unless you really want to OC. PSU is also more than enough.

My PSU wont cause issues seeing as it is a Bronze Tier and the newer cards want ... ummmm ... Better PSU's?? Or something??

After my Purchase, I do plan on getting myself a G-Sync Monitor. Will I still be safe with the normal GTX 1070 Windforce??

Do you have a 144hz monitor? If not, I wouldn't bother with a 1070 as it is overkill for 1080p. A 1060/RX 480 can still max out games over 60fps. 620W is plenty, 500W is enough. Are you referring to the founders edition? Get the G1 instead of the founders as it is faster and cheaper.

If all you are worried about is price, then just get the cheapest 1070 you can find. it will all be good enough for your needs, regardless of model.

Keep in mind there are reasons to spend more money on a better 1070. However you don't sound very eager to fork over a few more bucks.

At the moment I only own a 60HZ 1080p Monitor, but I am for certain going to upgrade to a 1080p G Sync Monitor

I only care about running games at 60FPS+ and also want to be future proof and not hit a wall in where I need to upgrade again just to enjoy my fav game that's going to release next year or two years from now at 60FPS+

The Gigabytes are custom AIB's, note the location of the HDMI not being in the middle.

My opinion is not to spend the extra cash, unless you really want another fan, I don't think you'll get your money's worth, these 10 series are boosting automatically without software involved, they can boost a little further with some software, but either model I don't think the 'factory overclock' for this generation is as important as it was before.

Here is an example, my 1060 came with a "Boost Overclock" to 1830mhz (from the 1500ish NVIDIA), it is currently boosting to 2000mhz.  Well past the "STRIX" model (mines a Dual Model), I saved about $80 thanks to price gauging and being "okay" with the less fancy GPU.  Money I put into an SSD.

So, save your cash and get the lower priced one assuming it has the features you want that aren't overclock related.

Everything is check but it at this point it doesn't really matter which one you get, they are more or less on same performance level.

A GTX 1070 is not overkill for 1080p 60 FPS, and I have no idea where people saying that it is are getting such an idea from.

If you get a 1060 or 480, you'll have to reduce graphical settings to get 60 FPS in graphically-intensive games. A GTX 1070 can usually get 60 - 90 FPS in graphically-intensive games, at 1080p, but there are still cases where a 1070 struggles to get 60 FPS at 1080p.

Notice that Hairworks is disabled in the Witcher 3 part of that demo.

Also, a GTX 1070 can't get 60 FPS at 1440p, therefore it can't really be called ideal for 1440p. The GTX 1070 is a 1080p card, and is the bare minimum if your goal is to have a constant 60 FPS, with all settings maxed, in graphically-intensive games.

Then the GTX 1070, or a 980ti, is the bare minimum for you. With a 1060 or 480, you'll be living on the lower-side of 60 FPS in graphically-intensive games, unless you lower graphical settings. And that's with already-released game, nevermind games that will release over the next two years.

If you get a 1060 or 480, you'll be in the exact situation that your above quote says is precisely the situation that you don't want to be in.

People, please stop calling a 1070 overkill for 1080p, 60 FPS. It is not. And a 1070 is definitely not a 1080p, 144 FPS  GPU - for that, a person will want at least a GTX 1080, even though a GTX 1080 doesn't get 144 FPS in graphically-intensive games at 1080p, either.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I noticed that the GTX 1070 GPU uses a 8pin connector ..... I have 6+2 pin connector. Will that work as a 8pin connector or does it have to be a straight 8pin connector?

You're right.
Most people who own 144hz monitors don't run max settings, and maximum graphical settings are getting more and more demanding.

So I guess 1070 is more of a future proof 1080p card than an overkill card and the 1060 is a current 1080p card (but not always 60+ fps at max settings).

1070 is overkill for 1080p. As for overclocking, they all overclock nearly the same, so throw that out the window from the get go. The real difference in cards are efficiency and cooling.

Personally, on a 1080p setup I would suggest a 1060 6gb or a 480 8gb.

it is not overkill. I have a gtx1070 playing at 1080p and while gaming syndicate I have to turn off a few settings to get 55-60 fps. the witcher 3 with hairworks on I have 58-61 FPS.. imagine that with a gtx1060. gtx1070 is not overkill at all

It is overkill with in reason. A few exceptions is not really negating the "overkill" idea. Sure, if you want huge fps in most games and have a 144 monitor then yep it's a great combo.  Other wise you will be setting the fps to 60 and walk away. I have a few 1070s, 60s, and 80s sitting around, with tons of hours in testing for reviews. Just expressing what I have come across and found.

In most average situations a 1060 6gb is a great fit for 1080 gaming. Again, in most cases. Not all cases. There is no "perfect" or "magical" card to rule them all.

with the 1060 you have a few drops of fps and you need to turn off a few settings to get 60-55, if your goal is to have 60 stable for every single game, you need a 1070, unless you are fine with high-ultra settings, and not very ultra
