Overclocking CPU for WoW

Het guys my build is

R9 390 msi 8gb

i5-4690k 3,5ghz

8gb ddr3

msi z97s krait edition

i basically only play wow which is running fine at around 60 fps most places except for very crowded places like big cities at 1080p. Sometimes I do get fps drops.

I've gotten quite enthusiastic about My Pc And optimizing my setup and peripherals So i was wondering if I would benefit from OC'ing my cpu since I heard it's a very could intensive game. If I were to oc it, I would go for the cooler master 212 Evo cooler. I'm curious whether or not I would be able to play at maybe 1440p and still get a solid fps? I would need to get a new monitor though for that...

What are your thoughts/experience?

Let me know if you need to know anything else

Increasing the resolution is a GPU dependent hit in fps, not cpu, but overclocking would likely help you since it sounds like physics of players and such is slowing your fps down, oh and check if the cryorig h7 is on sale as it is better than the 212 evo on all fronts except pricing (unless it's on sale)

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/631048-psu-tier-list-updated/ Tier Breakdown (My understanding)--1 Godly, 2 Great, 3 Good, 4 Average, 5 Meh, 6 Bad, 7 Awful

Also keep in mind you may be getting FPS hit because of the cross realm features and stuff that goes on in the big cities. I have a 6700k and a 1070 and I still get FPS loss because of those features.

I did not know that thank you!

then I should maybe look into OC'ing my R9 as well :P

temps for it when in-game is around 68c When i Cap fps at like 65 and enable v-sync. When i dont do that it Gets crazy hot, like close to 90s and therefore also quite noisy, dunno Why :(

What fps are you getting and are you playing at 1080p at 60mhz?

Yes I am. In most areas I can get between 80 - 100fps but when going into cross realm areas I have seen it dip down in to the 20's. It is very frustrating seeing that my rig can run much more taxing games such as witcher 3 flawlessly but then gets trashed by cross realm.

When a gpu goes above spec in temps it can get quite noisy due to the fan being maxed to stop overheating, also if vsync is off you might be getting some coil whine this is not an issue other than being annoying but I'll give you an example to compare the sound.

Oh and it gets hot since it's running maxxed 100% of the time while off vsync

Ignore the fan noise, it's the humm that I'm talking about

90C doesn't sound right. Is your case airflow working? Have you tried adjusting fan curves to prevent such overheating? GPUs are fine up to 85C but 90C is problem zone.

As for CPU OC, why not just try it? You can bump it to 4.7GHz easy. Thats the normal zone for the CPU IIRC.

I know it's crazy, right. But it does go to 85-90 degrees when I don't limit my fps and enable v sync in wow only. Have tried fiddling with fan curves which doesn't help..

Reaaon why I don't just do it because I'd have to buy an aftermarket cpu cooler :)

Ah, sorry. I read 212 Evo and thought you had it already. If you are going to buy, look for Cryorig H7 and be Quiet! Pure Rock too. Pure Rock (while bit more expensive at times) is noticable better performing than Evo.

You're still going to get large fps drops around large packs of players even when you overclock. I've ran 4.5Ghz on my 4670k and have still got them.

i5-4670K ~ RX 470 ~ Z87MX-D3H ~ MX300 525GB ~ CM Hyper 212+ ~ 12GB 1600MHz Ram ~ EarthWatts 650 ~ NZXT GAMMA ~ WD Blue 250GB
