Does the XFX 390 DD have a reference PCB as i am planning to install an aftermarket cooler? 

If it is not a reference, could you recommend an aftermarket cooler that would fit.

My card is hitting into the high 80's which i'm a bit uncomfortable with. Fans at 100%,  3 intakes 2 exhausts. already replaced the thermal compound with more premium stuff. Card is -100mv undervolted aswell.

It is reference, but you may have an issue with one component that's taller than the on on the reference card

Lower the power limit too by about 20%. Make sure you're not using static pressure fans for your exhaust. The stock exhaust fan that came with my case was static pressure optimized so it wasn't expelling the hot air well. Changing the fan dropped my GPU temps by about 13c. I rarely go above 72c now.

While its obvious that -20% will benefit him greatly in cooling...You should note that using -20% Power, he will be losing performance. (Clocks will drop faster @ higher temps, than they already are)

If thats not his intention, it's worth mentioning.

 

Noted - yes they climb back up when temps/power allow, but still worth mentioning, he may not know.

Nope. I got no performance loss. If he feels iffy about it, he can drop it only by 15%.

My rear exhaust fan is the standard zalman fan, i have 2 corsair af fans in the top. Should i move one to the rear?

If temps are already an issue for him, he'll notice it faster than you.

But it should help him by decent margins in regards to his cooling and max temps.

So with my -100mv + -20% power limit, max temp after running furmark for 5-6mins is 72C. Much greater improvement. This was the solution i have been trying to find for a couple of months now. Thanks for the help!

Thats awesome news.

Curious if there is a performance loss or sustained clock drop to do so..

But if it performs, and is staying cool, seems a win win.

If you look at the review for this card on Legitreviews, there was no performance difference when they overclocked the card using +5% power limit vs +50%, but there was a significant jump in power consumption. This got me thinking that Hawaii cards are using way more power than they need to. My idea was confirmed when I saw posts on the AMD reddit of people who lowered their power limits and voltages and got no performance loss, even when overclocking.

80c? That is not so bad considering it is a 390, my damn GTX 970 keeps hitting 80c or more...

There is a huge difference between 80...and HIGH 80's.

And jesus...where do you live that makes a GTX970 hit 80*c (presuming its non-reference) Seems a bit nuts.. on the high side.

I have two of these in Crossfire with a big OC and they go no higher than 82c even after DAYS of 100% usage straight.

 

80s is totally safe for these cards. I can verify as I have 9 months of running balls out 24/7 at max usage without a problem.
