i currently have a freenas server that i mostly use for streaming music. my setup right now is using an old phenom ii x6 1055t with 8Gb of dd3.

i will have extra i7 2600s soon,

should i keep using the phenom ii x6 1055t or use the i7 2600s?

Or does it matter?

if i switch CPU's with freenas still work or with have to reinstall it?

You should infact switch if you can because FreeBSD and AMD aren't always greatly compatible, much less supported.

If you switched you technically wouldn't need to re-install because it's all stored on the memory stick (assuming you did this in the first place). I would recommend a re-install because it may have stored information on there about the hardware, and its so damn easy to re-install that why wouldn't you.

No not at all, that's not how it works. You can take all those drives out, put them into any other FreeNAS machine and just import the volume if you wanted to. It will work fine.
