So I've been running a Hackintosh, and I want to install Windows 7 on a separate drive so I can get more games from steam. My question is how can I get a Windows on usb drive so I can install it. I'm confused on what version of Windows 7 to buy so I can install from scratch. I know this is a noob question but I've never installed windows from scratch before.

Buy a windows 7 key, download the appropriate ISO from http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/ or w/e

Then use this http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool to mount the ISO to a usb drive (4gb+)

Or you can buy windows 7 retail disc, where are you from/places you can buy from, so I can link for you?

Then do this to put it onto a USB drive.

1.  Open command prompt (run as admin)

2.  type "diskpart" and hit enter

3.  type "list disk" and hit enter, you will be able to see by the size column which one is your usb stick

4.  Say its disk 2, type "select disk 2" and hit enter

5.  Wipe it by typing "clean" and hit enter

6.  When thats done type "create partition primary" hit enter

7.  type "select partition 1" and hit enter

8.  type "active" and hit enter

9.  type "format fs=fat32" and hit enter and let it run.

10.  type "assign" and hit enter

11.  copy all the files onto the usb drive.

You'll have to download an ISO from somewhere. If you have a Disc with Windows on it then you can turn that Disc into an ISO image using a program. From there if you use Windows 7 USB DVD download tool you can put that ISO onto a memory stick. Turn off your PC and go into the Boot menu and choose the USB Stick as the boot drive and the install screen for Windows should come up.

US dollars. I'm assuming I download the x86 ISO because I'm running x86 architecture correct me if I'm wrong

Depends on how much RAM you have, are you a student?

Safest method is an OEM key from Amazon or Newegg. Alternative, since MS store doesn't sell windows 7 keys anymore, you can just install it on the computer and buy a key when windows asks you to register.

I have 8GB of RAM, but shouldn't I just get the 64 bit one? So it prompts me to buy one once I install? Good to know. Thanks!

Well...there you go :P

If you are going the ISO route, you will want this one: http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-24281.iso windows 7 professional 64bit.

Yep, get the 64bit version and it should ask you to buy a key in windows, you don't have to enter a key when you are prompted to during installation. And if you're a student at a university (or perhaps know a student at a university) you can usually buy a key through the school heavily discounted.

won't the professional version be more expensive? I was hoping the home premium would be cheapest

Yes it will be more expensive, you get a few features with it that home premium doesn't have (not like they are important but yeh :P)

So well, yeh....just get home premium if the price difference is noticeable.
