Hello guys and gals

I revived my 7990 this morning and have spent all day trying to get it to work. I uninstalled my old graphics card drivers and shut down then put the card it and everything seemed fine I booted up and installed the latest AMD drivers but later on when i restarted the computer it refused to enter windows everything starts up but the screen is either blank or cycles between red, green, blue and grey stripes.

Is this just a faulty card or a driver issue im not really sure i feel like ive tried everything. I dont think its a faulty card because every once in a while the computer will boot I even ran a full heaven benchmark so the graphics card seems fine.

Specs:

Windows 8

i7 4770k

8Gb Ram

256gb SSD

Asus Maximus Gene Vi

HD 7990

well i think that the PSU is to small. Mabye the PSU wattage is to small or someone said that it dont have dual 8 pin connectors and it cant get 375 watts, get a 850 watt PSU or higher.

(right me if i am wrong)

So i got a new psu, corsair TX750, still having the same problem does this mean its the motherboard ?

What board are you using?  I don't think the power supply could have been the problem since you're only idling the card and it shouldn't use more than 100w or so at idle.

i7 4770k, 16GB Corsair Vengeance

Gigabyte z87, Phanteks Enthoo Primo

So any body have an idea im all out ?

Try updating your board, if you are now taking a closer look at it.

Edit: by updating I mean a bios update, not a new board.

Also try laying the case on its side, maybe there is a contact problem because of the weight of the card, just saying, i had this problem once.

Wow you had issues at 730W and decided to get yourself a 750W??? Haha that cracks me up. 20W to the rescue!

You need to ensure the PSU's current on the main rail can deliver both 57 ampere (A) and 750W. (on that rail)

Taken from the specs of the TX750:

"The dedicated 60A, single +12V rail provides up to 720W power output"

I am by no means guaranteeing that this is your issue. But if I were you, and I were suspecting my PSU was limiting the use of my GPU, I wouldn't just bump it up by another 20W....

See if you can get your friend to lend you his PSU and put it into your system with your motherboard and see if it'll run.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

Firstly a basic physics lesson, wattage is calculated by amperes * volts therefore it is impossible to have 750W on 57A rail that delivers 12 volts, the maximum possible is 684W.

Secondly the psu is not the problem as far as I know the card is getting plenty of power and my oraginal post on my psu voltage was incorrect it was actually 630w my mistake

I had "" same problem "" ( I don't know if it's really the same)  with my 7970 yesterday... and I was just trying the new driver.  My problem was something in my windows. I'm not sure what it was.  I restored to an "old" restore point and downloaded again the drivers, and installed. It's working fine now.

I'm using windows 8.1

no, 850w psu is way overkill. GET A GOOD SEASONIC PSU. 630w should be enough! Get a good BRAND psu. not some cheap shit, and Thermaltake is known for bad PSUs.

The Calculator you linked to gave me the following:

Our recommended PSU Wattage: 626 W

Please click “Find PSUs” button to find out the best results.

And I run a 600w dual 12v rail Thermaltake. They're not as bad as everyone makes them out to be. Thermaltake has two other companies making their products and one of them is known for the bad quality models. Oddly enough... my PSU is from the bad company.... not too bad if you ask me.

Not if it's affecting the Bios post screen.

You're PSU has an efficiency of 83%

if we do the math that means if it pulls 630 Watt's at the wall 630x0,83=523 Watt and you said yourself that in real world application an entire system pulls 511 Watts with a HD7990.

Now that should be enough in theory, but let's assume your power supply hes degrades over time, it wouldn't take much to get at that 523 watts.

So it should probably be the PSU that's the issue for you.

Now I do find it wierd that it crashes at launch because the card shouldn't be that much demanding in startup. but seing that it worked with your friends build I'd say try a different powersupply (perhaps borow it from your friend or something before buying a new one.

I have already tried it with a 750w psu in my system still no luck
