2011 Workstation Pre-built Upgrade

Sreno1

I am picking up a HP Pavilion 2011 Desktop and a monitor for $50. I see this as a chance to save some money and upgrade it as a second rig or to resell.

Product page http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03033829

What I plan on keeping in it:

500gb hard drive with windows 7 on it.

MOBO
Monitor

What I think needs to be upgraded:

PSU

CPU

Ram

Graphics card

My updated build http://pcpartpicker.com/list/dB4WtJ

Id get a i7 2600. It will be much faster than any amd cpu in games You can get them used for about 120.

Keep the motherboard.

I see the i7 2600 and it says it has a pretty decent internal graphics. I know it is a disgrace to use internal graphics, but are these internal graphics good enough for Overwatch/CSGO? If so it may be better to get a i7 2600 or 2600k and save spending $100+ on a graphics card.

I dislike the MOBO because I believe it can only take 4gb of ram. Maybe I am wrong.

Not really.

No reason to get a k version, you can oc on this board.

A 460 is much better than the igpu.

This should fit in the case and psu envelope. The ssd is optional.

Here's a pretty good PSU that I have been using for quite a while.

(I have no idea why the list price is $76, but its been "on sale" forever so)

Thanks for the recommendation.

The i7 2600 seems like a better value than the i3 6300. The i7 has 4 cores at 3.4GHz and can be OCed on the stock MOBO.

The advantage of the i3-6400 is that it is Skylake, so the build uses newer tech and has more upgrade options. The performance gap is surprisingly narrow.

You're missing the fact he has a working mobo already

No, I did not miss that fact. I simply believe that it is not worth keeping since it requires the purchase of out of production parts. (The motherboard is PCIe 2 which may limit gpu performance going forward. And memory is single channel, max two 4GB DDR3-1333 modules.)

I am going for performance per dollar, not upgrade path. I'm trying to build the cheapest 1080p gaming rig using recycled parts.

If I go with the i7 2600 I get a better CPU for less and save $70-100 on buying a MOBO. Low clocked ram is an issue but I think 8gb 1333 will be fine (maybe I am wrong).

If you are referring to the HP/Compaq motherboard, it should work. The motherboard has a single x16 PCIe 2.0 slot. Looking at the picture of the motherboard in the OP link, there does not seem to be any mechanical issue with the gpu fitting.

One note, an mATX motherboard will look a little odd in an S340 (ATX ) case.
