Public universities usually implement very strict rules on privacy and security. I would recommend talking to the it department of your institute and ask, what they log and in which cases these logs can be accessed.

VPNs just shift the point of trust. A VPN-Provider could also log all your activity and unlike your institute they have a comercial interest to do so. So it all comes down to who you trust more.

@Kosios

And on top of that we never look at the logs unless we REALLY REALLY have to. It's just a matter of who the hell actually wants to look through them, nobody. If you actually think we bother looking at the logs just because we can then you are very mistaken. In most countries there are privacy laws that do not allow on selling of this information so if your worried about that then it's a non issue, breaking those laws is actually an extremely harsh punishment.

We use log analyzers to alert us on serious breaches and incidents, manual human reading is only done when we are looking in to application/network issues or security complaints.

The only valid reason to use a VPN or anything else is to get past website blocking. But remember the network is provided to you by the University to assist with your study and to access any material required for your courses, it is not free use and should not be treated as your home network. If you do what you are wanting to do at a work place you'll quickly find yourself without a job, get used to it.

If your name isn't on the invoice and you aren't directly paying for it then it's not yours and don't treat it as such. If you want personal internet use a 4G hotspot on your phone.

Hey guys so I am at Uni right now.  I was wondering if simply using a vpn will make them unable to see my web traffic.  I already know that they can see that data is going to and from my computer and that they can see that someone is accessing a certain site.  I was just wondering if they can see exactly what is going to my computer, or if it will all be encrypted so they can't see it.

You will probably find that VPN is blocked. If it is, and the SSH port 22 is open, you could get a cheap VPS, and use Putty to create a SOCKS5 proxy

Do they not have secure WiFi at the university, that they can see your traffic? Or you are using a cable?

As for VPN, it is possible, unless the uni has set up some restrictions that would block it.

Here in Estonia, we have eduroam, which is definitely secure. And I can use VPN as well (using OpenVPN), should I want to.

Nah don't worry.  I want you to know that I am grateful for the chance that I have to go to college.  I take it very seriously and I work hard.
