Amd or Nvidia graphics card

 I'm thinking of upgrading my Graphics card from a Gtx760. And I need help choosing a graphics card. 

 I can get a R9 390X for 249$ in my country  and I'm interested, but I've never used an Amd card before so I'm a bit hesitant. Or should I get the new Gtx1060 for 330$ instead? I have no problems with PSU wattage.

1060 is about 10% faster than a 390X but not worth close to 100$ more. What exact PSU do you have?

in a nutshell in gpu choosing :

 

If you want decent woking bang for your buck GPU , AMD.

If you want high end preformance , Nvidia.

IMO, go for the RX 480.

Only in DX11 - under DX12 they are either tied or the 480 pulls ahead. And the 480 is usually 30-40$ cheaper

IMO , AMD has better driver support in long term. 

Nvidia on the other hand.......

Weakness has its strengths too.

Sure 1060 is powerful , but i think saving money plus being able to game in 1080P is a better outlook than spending more on a nvidia card just to jiggle your puffingtons.

I have the R9 390X. I can run most games on ultra settings at 1080p, though I usually play at high settings at 1440p. I get good fps and am happy with the card. Only thing is that it does run quite hot 70C at full load. 

 

The next card I go for will probably be Nvidia, the 1070 or 1080 for example but I expect this card to last another couple of years.

70*C is actually quite cool... most GPUs run at about 75-80*C under max load

Most cards will run to there period, because they're designed to run as fast as they can before they hit thermal thresholds. Operating temperature isn't really a concern. It's how hard your cooler has to work to keep that temperature is where the main concern is.

The 1060 draws less power than the 480 in almost every setting. At idle & with 2 or more monitors, the 480 draws 400% more power than the 1060. Granted that were only talking 35 watts here, but at idle with 2 monitors, the 1060 is 6 watts, the 480 is 40 Watts.

 

In gaming the difference is about 40 watts an hour too. If like me you only upgrade every 4 years or so, the 1060 pays for itself in cheaper electricity, but I keep my system on 24/7.

 

The 1060 also outperforms or equals the 480 in all games, except those specifically optimised for AMD. The 1060 also handles DX12 just fine, & pretty much equals the 480.

 

I was going to replace my AMD HD 7850 with the 480, but when I saw the savings from decreased power draw went with the 1060 (Asus Dual OC version). It was $40 more, but was worth it.

not alot compared to nvidias "they are designed to run at 90c" graphics cards  

 

but yea afaik the 390x is a good card , used its even cheaper , but if you want something nice and new , get the 480

if you want a 4k hardcore graphics card, then get nvidia card. If you want cheaper and 2k gaming then get a AMD card

But neither card is designed for 4K? You will get 10fps in 4k if you're lucky. Even at 2k both of those cards would both be pushed passed their limit.

 

The 1060 is great at 1080p, but so is the 480, for more than that, people either need the NVidia 1070/1080, or wait until AMD launches the 490 (to Vega & beyond).

The 480 in my country is still overpriced. you can get a 1060 for the same price, so I don't know about that
