DDR4 memory? what's so special?

That's is a huge claim. I hope you have your back up for it.

Not a huge claim when you realize integrated graphics use the system memory.

it has only been 1 year since the last release of a Intel CPU that supported DDR3 and only 6 months since the last AMD release.

age isnt really a factor especially for DDR3 VS ddr4 mobos.

Yeah but the latest amd cpu now launched with ddr4 support, with the launch of zen ddr3 will become obsolete.

Quad channel, higher density, lower power usage, higher operating speeds. With lower end CPUs and APUs you will gain about 10FPS with faster RAM.

Quad channel isn't unique to ddr4, x79 motherboards have quad channel ddr3.

I also have a long-lasting doubt about speeds.  DDR4 frequencies start higher than DDR3, but the two overlap for most of the relevant range, in particular the 2133 standard, which isn't uncommon in DDR3, and it's the standard of a couple generations of DDR3 APUs. On the other hand, timings tend to be higher in DDR4, the standard being CL15.

So,  all things together, is DDR4 faster than DDR3? Is 2133 CL15 DDR4 faster than 2133 CL9 or CL10 DDR3? Or 2400 CL11 DDR3?

Asking the same in a different way: if frequency and timungs were equal, would a DDR4 setup perform memory tasks faster than a DDR3 equivalent?

This article is exactly what you are looking for.

Really ddr3 is pretty much identical to ddr4 at identical frequency, but with programs like cinebench that like low CAS latency the ddr3 is actually faster then the ddr4, but really low CAS ram is really only going to be beneficial in situations like extreme overclocking where you need that low CAS to get the best benchmark scores.

But with APUs I would like to see one of new bristol ridge one with ddr4 4Ghz+ ram.

Why DDR4

Advantages

  • Lower operating voltage (1.2V versus 1.5V ro 1.65V)
  • Higher operating frequency (JEDEC spec is 2133 MHz vs 1066 MHz for DDR3)
  • Allows for higher density memory chips
  • More power efficiency

Disadvantages

  • More latency (you can see, most DDR3 sticks can be found with CAS 7/8/9 timings, where DDR4 is now common with CAS 9/10/11 or higher)
  • More expensive to manufacturer / produce (*to an extent*)

But...this was from the Consumer Electronics Shows (CES) 2013. Micron (AKA Crucial) used this as their marketing / explaination at the time.

If you are not aware, Micron is one of the three (or four?) major Memory IC manufacturers out there.
