You don't need a ram disk. The OS will automatically cache all the files that are used often and cache disk writes.

since he mentioned server with 112GB ram, i'm guessing this is for a specific use case where ramdisk could have big advantages.

Totaly depends on what your doing.

Hey OP what are you using this for?

It won't really help for file servers over gig networking.

I wouldn't use it as a vm boot vomume.

If you care about your data, then id make sure you have dual psu's, dual ups's, and a ecc, a perferbly a heartbeat clone.

This is more like a test to see what i can do with a Ramdisk and how far i can push it and since i'm using VMware i'd like to have a Ramdisk OS :)

Data-loss is not rly that important

Since i don't have an SSD or any form of fast storage i'd like to use a Ramdisk :)

The system i got under my bed9_9 is a HP Proliant DL160 G6 dual xeon running esxi.(Don't remember the specs, server is also off atm)

If you running esxi, you can't make a ram disk. Its not supported in that OS.

If you want ramdisk, id use linux and kvm(if you want easy management you can use ovirt.)
