Is there any tutorials on how to make a media server (on any platform with max compatabilty) by using an old pc/laptop, over a local network.

Define your meaning of "max compatibility"

There are heaps out there, try google.

Just a few things you need to take note of-

1. The server should be up most of the time essentially meaning if you go with a PC it is recommendable that it is power efficient.

2. Depending on the OS you use there will be many tutorials. (on older computers I would recommend using the stock OS it comes with or switching to a server os and following online tutorials.

3. Most home servers are limited by the router speeds so try to find an efficient router.

I suck a typing, preparw for typos.

I am currently building a Plex media server. Not sure about the effeciveness yes as it is still being build, but it seems promising so far. Might be a platform for you to check out.

You won't be disappointed by it's "effectiveness" or "compatibility".
I run Plex myself and have no issues with it across Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and chromecast from the latter.

Step 1. Install Linux OS or Windows or whatever you want.

Step 2. "apt-get install plexmediaserver" or run the Windows installer or your OS equivalent.

Step 3. Copy media across

Step 4. Setup Plex Libraries and done.

you forgot spend 3 days and  15 hours total  trying to get samba to f*cking work for linux . there are no guides that have the complete setup that arent outdated.

for a home server either go amd for cheap /ebay pc tower  or reuse old hardware for a plain file server a crap pc from the 90's would work all you need is sata 2 a decent dual core cpu and 1gb internet
