Good Upgrade for Beyerdynamic DT 880's?

kennyk2228

Hey guys,

So I have been using the DT 880's for a couple of years and, don't get me wrong, they are absolutely awesome headphones, but I was looking for, not necessarily replacements for them, but headphones that I could get to start expanding the variety of headphones that I use. Any recommendations or tips would be very much appreciated!

Can we get a little more direction? Based on your current criteria, pretty much any headphone on earth would satisfy.

Oh wow, my bad, I just realized how unspecific that was... lol. Basically, I have been using the DT 880's for awhile, and while I really like their comfort and quality, the sound signature just seemed, kind of flat, and while this is a very good quality in a lot of sense, I wanted something that might have a little bit punchier of a bass and would provide a different experience than the DT 880's. I hope that this provides a little bit more clarity for what I am looking for...

Something different you say? It depends what you want, because everyone makes different sounding headphones. Even if you stick with something from Beyerdynamic you are going to get something really quite different. Maybe something from either Sony (studio range) or Sennheiser (anything is good) within your price range could be a good bet if you are shopping around.

DT 990 or DT 770 would be obvious choices if you want to keep the Beyer ergonomics and build. Mass drop TH X-00 would be a possibility if you can get in on a drop or find one used; it will have a lot more bass, though and a warmer sound overall.

Hmm, those specific Fostex's seem quite hard to get your hands on, are there any others on the market like them that you would recommend?

Tighter bass, and maybe more bass, but not something that is too overpowering

I would go for the thx00 as suggested, there are plenty on eBay, /r/avexchange, headfi classified, etc.

well you have the K712 and K7xx, those would give you more bass, There is also the massdrop TH X00 and well the DT 770 and DT 990 both have more bass than the DT880

the HE400s are fairly neutral, kinda the HD600 of planar headphones. The HE400i have more bass than the 400s.

So what would you recommend between the HE400i and Fostex TH-x00?

@FloRolf owns the TH-X00 so he can most likely talk a bit more about them than I can, but from what I have heard the TH-X00 has the most bass of those two options

I even have both, the 400i and X00 ;)

For a regular basis I'd prefer the 400i sooo much. Don't get me wrong, both are excellent headphones, but the X00 is just a little bit too much. It's head achening after some time.

The 400i on the other hand feels like an upgrade to the dt880 which I happen to also own lol (what's wrong with my life, really?)

It's the much smoother, all around better headphone for more listening occasions.

I can warm heartedly recommend the 400i. It's also more comfortable.

oh yeah. Well I have not been myself for two weeks now, it is so nice being sick and not being able to sleep much.

So since the X00 can be a bit too much, are you looking into selling them? :D

What would you recommend between the 400i and 400s? Is the 100$ worth it? Should I look for some used pair of 400i's? Any help, other than what you have already given, would be awesome!

No I'll keep them for sure. They are still really awesome, just not for every occasion. You got to be in the X00 mood. ;)

I can tell you at the end of the month when I tried the 400s but for now I'd say get a used pair of 400i.

I would say yes. The 400s is the more neutral sounding, while the 400i are more flat. You where looking for headphones with about the same bass right? Then the 400i would fit that the best and planar bass mmmhhhhh, that shit is tight as F. I had the HE400i for a couple of days and damn they are good, the Focus A Pads are said to make them even better...

Well lately I have been looking into getting some that are not "flat" or neutral sounding, just to mix things up. Something like the HD650, X2, SHR1540, PM3, just gotta decide now :D
