using a old pc as Server

Go to solution Solved by gtx1060=value,

as a nas it'll be fine, maybe a faster hdd and upgrade to a faster cpu, if you're doing rendering, buy a completely new pc

recently i got the change to get my hands on the pc of my parents since they are getting one of those HTPC pc's and i had the idea to make it into a server for games* and maby as a nightly render server, but here is the problem it's a old HP Compaq DC5800** from 2008 and i don't know if it can pull it off or do i have to upgrade the cpu?

specs:

CPU: intel core 2 duo e8400

GPU: radeon hd 5450

RAM: 4GB DDR 2 (to lazy to look up the speed at this time)

HHD: some 320 GB hdd.

PSU: don't know but probably some OEM unit

CASE: a HP case

MOBO: i don't know but acording from tweakers it has this as io: 1x gigabit lan (RJ 45), 6x usb 2.0, VGA, DVI, 2x ps2 ports and some random ass port that i don't know the name off so there is a pic for you to see***

Spoiler

* mostly Unturned but sometimes also ksp and factorio

**the original spec are upgraded to the specs you see in the spec chart in this post

***the card that you see here is different and not a Radeon Hd 5450 like in the pc i will be using

Specs: CPU: I5 6600K (4.5 GHZ), GPU: RX 480 (stock), Mobo: MSI Z170A tomahawk AC, RAM: Corsair 16GB drr4 2600, CASE: NZXT S340, storage 240GB crusial SSD and a 1TB WD HHD

well its not going to be fast by any means. it depends on what kinds of game servers you want to run on it, for rendering at night it should be fine, its not going to do it fast but it will do it eventually.

like serious3d CAD rendering or just some project where performance doesn't matter, only that it gets done?

I've never really seen GPU make much performance difference, unless you're working with After Effects?

Not to any advantage to pay $100-150 for?
