Hey forums!

I didn't know exactly where to post this but I want to upgrade either my CPU or my GPU.

specs:

ASUS 144hz 1080p monitor

i5 3570k @4.4GHz

MSI GTX 980Ti Gaming 6G Edition (I think I lost the silicon lottery on this one as it has loads of probs)

Gigabyte z77 d3h mobo

16gigs of RAM.

anyways should I get a gtx 1070 or 1080.

OR

get a i7 6700k + mobo + RAM

money isnt that much of a problem. I just want to get some second opinions!

main use for the parts will be gaming and some school stuff at 1080p 60 to 144 fps

(with issues mentioned above for example is I can't run the witcher 3 (without hairworks) at ultra 1080p on solid 60fps while I EASILY should. hell I cant even run Enderal (the skyrim mod) at 60 fps with medium settings nor am I able to play fallout 4 properly.)

I also got issues which I think are caused by bottlenecking.

hopefully I can get some help on this subject

  • You should not be having those problems with your GPU! Everything that you currently have should be sufficient for your needs already. I wouldnt upgrade anything yet. Especially for gaming at 1080p. Have you tried to trouble shoot the issues with your GPU?

Have you checked your CPU/GPU usage during gaming? If your CPU is pinned at 100% all the time, but your GPU is not. Then you should upgrade it. If it is the other way around, GPU upgrade.

To RGB, or not to RGB? That is the question.

Okay, it sounds like your hardware is not to blame then. If neither are being utilized to 100 % you have something else bottlenecking them.

Could also be that the GPU is faulty somehow, as you kind of stated yourself.

What sort of problems are occuring?

well to put it bluntly. it doesn't overclock aswell as it should. (this is a minor prob)

out of the box it came underclocked and had to fix it by flashing the bios (Which worked fine) so thats one problem fixed I guess.

but it still isn't able to pull its weight on titles it should dominate.

for example the 980ti should run witcher 3 at ultra 1080p without hairworks on a steady 60fps. I can't get it past 45 tho.

It should be able to do fine as far as your GPU goes. If you OCed it you might have a bad consistant OC, or your card has taken a hit to many. So you could try to decrease the OC. Are your drivers up to date? Also it might be that your CPU is bottlenecking the card. So what kind of problems you experienced then saying your card might be faulty?

Asuming the GPU is still fine I would swap CPU and mobo anyway if you wanted to upgrade, so I suggest that.

it's possible but I wouldn't have any clue on how to get a replacement.

tried disabeling/lowering the OC often but performance issues remained.

How are temps etc, is your cooling/airflow good enough? Have you dusted out your PC. If it came bad out fo box would have send it back for a replacement. If you have garanty you could still do that. 980Ti ain't that old yet.

Just RMA it?

Also if your PSU is shite it can do all sorts of fun stuff with your hardware.

Your gpu is really fucked up. I play enderal on a 750 ti in very high, on 1440x900 and get 40~75 fps (avg 55)

If the problem is indeed the gpu, change it.

Enderal is a fine example of a game where my gpu doesnt go past 40-45% load. whilst my cpu isnt at 100% either.

I got a 700W powersupply. is that fine?

It depends on the quality of it and how many amps it can deliver on the 12V rail. Your card needs 38 amps.

That might be your problem since it can only deliver 25 amps on each of its two rails. If the power to the GPU is only drawn from one of the rails then you have a problem. Your GPU will basically be starving for power.

I got 2 cables plugged into my GPU? does that mean I use 2 rails? if not should I get a new PSU? if so could you recommend me one
