Planning to upgrade. Any changes/tips?

fillefilip8

Hello! I'm planning to upgrade my pc mostly beacuse it cant run games at 1080p 60fps only like 720p 20fps...

Current rig(potato):

i7 3770

GT 630

12GB ram (ddr3)

(prebuilt acer pc from 2012 with a acer motherboard)

Upgraded rig:

I5 4970k

GTX 960 4GB

Same ram as my old rig (moving it over)

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-GAMING 3

(I currently have 2 monitors and all gaming gear already)

Any changes or tips?

Bad GPU choice, unnecessary CPU choice, you don't need to upgrade your CPU, your i7-3770 is more powerful than a 4670K.

You do not need to upgrade anything besides the graphics card, look into RX 480 / GTX 1060 / GTX 1070 depending on your budget, and that's pretty much all.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

Ya I agree too, unless you want to upgrade to 5th or 6th generation CPU, which is sadly would need a new mobo

There's no need for doing that, 3770 could even support a 1070 imho.

Reason why im upgrading CPU is because gpu doesnt work on the Acer motherboard.... And I cant buy a motherboard for the i7 3770 since they are not buyable in Sweden anymore

Gpu is already bought.  And a GTX 960 is good enough.  not going into 4k gaming

Do not downgrade to an i5 then. Look into i7-6700. Though if I were you I'd just buy a used motherboard for the 3770.

GTX 960 is one of the worst value cards on the market atm. It's bad.

My 960 was bought one year ago......

Im not planning to join the ddr4 path either. Since im not willing to pay that much. Do u recommend another i7 then that is on ddr3

Again, the cheapest way to do this is to buy a used board for your 3770 as it's still a very capable CPU that can support nearly every GPU on the market right now and is able to run any game at ultra settings. But if you want to upgrade and don't want to go DDR4 route, the fastest CPU for you would be the i7-4790K, it's pointless imho though.

If you want more performance you need to get a new GPU, 960 is not good enough for 1080p Ultra 60FPS. Something of a GTX 1060 range is.

I've got a similar setup, i7-3770 @3,9gHz with Turbo to 4,3gHz paired with an R9 290X and 16GB of RAM. It's a setup that's basically perfect for maxing out games at 1080p now. So you need a GPU of that range, 290X is slightly faster than: RX 480, R9 390,  and is slightly slower than: R9 390X, GTX 1060, GTX 980

So these 6 GPUs are what you should be looking at after you buy a board for your 3770. It should last you for at least 3 years of 1080p gaming, then you'll have to upgrade the entire rig. Do you have an SSD? If you don't, get one, at least 120GB for the system and a few games, preferably 240GB.

There is no way to get motherboard for my i7 3770 beacuse I live in Sweden. Etc Amazon = nope. EBay = nope since I dont want to ship from UK and usa etc.

I do have an ssd. I have not used it yet tho. If I can play maybe high or medium 1080p 60fps im fine for now. If I buy the CPU I was thinking to buy. Can I upgrade to a better gpu in the future like 1060 or something.

Doesn't Sweden have sites where people sell used stuff? Poland has like 3 or 4 sites like that, you can get older motherboards dirt-cheap. Buy a used board for the 3770, it's enough for a 1060, and a 1070, it could also potentially support a 1080 at 1440p and higher.

They are expensive......

I still prefer "new". As long as the rig i wanna get (the cpu + motherboard) is able to play games at 1080p.... And if i can upgrade my gpu in the future that would be even better.

Do u prefer an i7-4790K instead of the i5 then?

A used board doesn't mean it's broken. It's a motherboard, not a graphics card. I've never had a motherboard die on me and I've had like 6 motherboards in the past few years, three of those were used.

Really, you would pay for example 40$ for a used motherboard instead of buying a 300$+ 4790K and a 100$+ Z97 motherboard + an aftermarket cooler if you don't own one to let you overclock the chip for virtually no performance increase with a GPU such as GTX 1060. If you get yourself a 1070 then maybe you'd get 2-3 more FPS, maybe 5 in some games, but that's a big IF.

But if you're really set on getting a new platform, then the most powerful one that you could get for DDR3 would be a 4790K with a Z97 board. There is an option for a 6700K with a DDR3 board, as there are some Skylake-compatible DDR3 boards, but I've heard that this pairing is not a good choice.
