So i would like a new GPU because my 270X just isn't doing it. This is what im between: The EVGA GTX 1060 FTW or the EVGA GTX 980 Hybrid (Used). The 1060 is $300 and the used GTX 980 is $330. I will be doing F@H (I see the Hybrid cooler being better here) and games.

Scenario that might happen: "Oh Tubs why would you get either one of those?!?! Just get a GTX 1070 or 1080!!!" My response would be, Im aware of that, but I currently don't have that kind of money. On top of that, I will be getting a new system in about a year but I won't have enough money for a full system right away, so I will use whatever card I have.

Just get the cheapest/bang for buck 1060 you can find if you want to save money/on a budget. (ex. EVGA GTX 1060 SC)

Vulcan (Main): Intel Xeon E3-1241 V3 | MSI GTX 1060 Armor OC | G. Skill Sniper 16GB + 4GB @1600  | Crucial BX100 120GB, 1TB WD Caviar Blue, 2TB Seagate Barracuda, 1TB External Seagate Portable | EVGA 650 GQ | Cryorig H7 | NZXT Source 210 Elite

Carbon (Laptop): Lenovo ThinkPad x230 | Core i7 3520m | 8GB Memory (2x4GB)  | 180GB SSD, Sandisk Ultra 128GB SD Card

I would get the 1060 becuase it has more VRAM, less power consumption, a newer architecture and all of the new features offered with pascal. If you are interested here is a live game comparison between the 980, 1060, rx480 and the 970.

Also take a look at this Gigabyte 1060, it is a 6GB variant and is only $269.99 vs the $300 of the EVGA variant.

Yeah

get a cheaper model because you don't benefit from the more expensive models. Even the cheaper models overclock really well, so you are unlikely to get a bigger performance boost from the more expensive models unless the chips are binned for overclocking

hello!

is it me you're looking for?

Spoiler

Desktop: X99-PC

CPU: i7 5820k

Mobo: X99 Deluxe

Cooler: Dark Rock Pro 3

RAM: 32GB DDR4
GPU: GTX 1080

Storage: 1TB 850 Evo, 1TB HDD, bunch of external hard drives
PSU: EVGA G2 750w

Peripherals: Logitech G502, Ducky One 711

Audio: Xonar U7, O2 amplifier (RIP), HD6XX

Monitors: 4k 24" Dell monitor, 1080p 24" Asus monitor

Laptop:

-Overkill Dell XPS

Fully maxed out early 2017 Dell XPS 15, GTX 1050 4GB, 7700HQ, 1TB nvme SSD, 32GB RAM, 4k display. 97Whr battery :x
Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

Yeah

You can get any one of these 1070's for around $350 if you can pay with a debit card, decline free returns (frivolous returns, it's still free to return if it's broken), and enter the code shop10.

Or this one for $378:

Or if you want a 1060, all of the same models above turn out around $225 after promo codes:

Or this zotac 2 fan 1060 6gb model for $240:

The basic evga 1060 acx 3.0 is $281 on jet after discounts and promo codes:

Search around and you'll find more.
