Make my own eGPU ?

Hi everyone,

 

This will be the first time I will do something technical really. I am not a prof.

 

I need to know how its possible to connect a laptop to a external GPU.

How is it possible that a TB3 cable is able to do this?

 

What parts do I need for this? Any links or guides for this?

 

I want to test if it works or not.

I rather do it myself then buying a 500$ razer case...lol

You might be able to find a unused M-PCIe slot in your laptop and buy a mPCIe to Full size PCI adaptor

They make thunderbolt 3 to pcie connectors that would be faster since mpcie is only pcie x1.

 

Most are outrageously expensive though, and will cost $300+, and really aren't worth it unless you absolutely need it.

Looking at the market for external PCIe to Thunderbolt enclosures, they all start at about $250+ and it's likely they don't come with enough power to run anything more powerful than a GPU that doesn't need a PCIe plug. So it's likely there isn't anything out there specifically designed for video cards other than what Razer has.

 

You'd also must have a Thunderbolt 3 interface, because anything else will not provide enough bandwidth. (Well, Thunderbolt 2 might, but you're teetering on the edge)

Honestly I think that we should just wait till more companies come up with eGPU cases, and for the prices to go down

I think that will take a few years...and I am not patient at al sadly.

I want to buy a thin laptop and be able to use my eGPU so I can game on it.

I'm pretty certain there's a "and it must be cheap" implied here. Which at the moment you're asking for a unicorn.

 

First go source some laptops with the appropriate interface before thinking about this because as I said, you must have Thunderbolt 3.
