so Ive took a major dislike to my Asus strix 970. ( Im on my 3rd replacement )

so Im looking at a cheap option to replace the 970 and hold off the upgrade itch until next year as not long moved house.

How would the 1060 compare to the 970? would it be a small upgrade? or would I be as well looking for another brand of 970 and picking up one 2nd hand?

whatever card I get the now will replace a 7950 in my FX8350 system next year.

It should be a small upgrade. It will use less power though. My brother upgraded from a 780 Ti (Roughly equal to a 970) and the new 1060 gets around 10-30 fps higher (depends on game though). It runs much cooler and quieter though. However, I would consider waiting, the prices for a 1060 are kind of crazy high at the moment ($300-$330ish). I actually got a used 980 Ti instead of a 1060 because the 980 Ti was only like $30 more...

It's considered a slight upgrade to the 970, I'd only do it if you can sell your current 970 (As I did with my brother's 780 Ti) to recover some of the cost of a new 1060.

the last 2 times my 970 was away I got a shot of my mates 2nd 780ti its the Ghz edition it wiped the floor with my 970.

but yea plan would be to sell my current 970 to outweigh some of the cost.

I do the like the idea of the 980ti Ive been keeping my eyes open in the local classifieds and gumtree but nothing has came up.

1060 would be a good upgrade from a 970. The 1060 is extremely power efficient and would earn you much better frame rates in comparison. Would you look at the 3gb or 6gb variant?

Ive thought about that and my thoughts are as it would be getting kept and finding its way into my other system through time I would go for the 6gb version

Interesting. Yeah, we never overclocked the 780 Ti (Or the 1060) to save on power. I've never had a 970 so I couldn't compare it to the 780 Ti we had (It was a used EVGA Classified edition one).

I would go for the 6GB version of the 1060 for sure though. I'd only do it if you can get the 1060 at the $300 or less price point. The savings in power might may itself off over time, as the idle usage of the 1060 is much lower than the 780 Ti (Under load too).

If you really wanted to push it you could push for a lower end 1070 as aren't crazily higher priced. Otherwise the 1060 is a great card and the 6gb variant will offer plenty of power. :D

I had looked at the lower end 1070's but over here there coming in around the £350 mark for the cheapest where as the 1060 is coming in at £250 for a mid range card but can be got for as little as £230 for a cheap 6gb card

I guess the 1060 6gb justifies itself then. You could then use the saved money towards other upgrades you might want to do or just have extra cash left over. 9_9

Yeah, that was the problem I ran into with shopping for a 1060 (US though)...1060 was overpriced, the 1070 was slightly overpriced, but the 980 Ti came in the middle, so I went for that instead. It was $100 cheaper than the 1070, even if the 1070 was 10% better (probably is), I'd rather save the $100...

I think go for the 1060 though.

The only problem I would now have with the 980 TI is that it is slowly becoming obsolete. Distributors are trying to get rid of them because the power they offer is matched by the 10 series GPU's with better power efficiency and slightly better frame rates. What 980 TI did you go with? Does it function to your expectations still? Because the above is just my speculation. :D

Ah, some Gigabyte Gaming one. I just went with the cheapest used 980 Ti I could find on Amazon. I don't do much gaming though, as I'm still okay with my FirePro V7900 (equal to a Radeon HD 5850), but I got the latest neptunia game and it's depressing getting lower than 20 fps. So a 980 Ti should be a devastating jump for me, eager to get it in.

Yeah, the "sales" they're doing with the 970 are kind of disgusting...who would buy a 970 on sale when it's the same price as a 1060 not on sale...It wouldn't surprised me if they are making up sale just to get more money by making them seem like a better deal vs a newer 10 series card. Used market however, 980 Tis are flooding the market place as people upgrade to the 1080. I don't game much at all, I just got hooked to the Neptunia series after seeing some lets play videos of it. Also, I do programming and modeling work and it's depressing seeing Unity act like a powerpoint slide show at the moment.

Yeah, you need the folks that are asking for a normal price (That actually know how depreciation works as the GPUs age) or ones that have idea how much they're actually worth and price them too low (That's how I got mine off of the amazon marketplace)...I think I just lucked out. haha.

I still find it amazing that you can get a 970 or 780 Ti for below $200 used for the most part these days...I still remember paying $200 for my first GPU, the HD 4850 back in 2008. haha.

yea I bought a gainward 970 last year for £220 2nd hand but a few months ago I paid £200 for a new Asus strix 970 on sale from £250 and now you can get them new for around £170 if you shop about.. its pretty mad. I sold my old gainward for £200 when I bought the Asus looking back on it I should have stuck with the gainward.. it wouldn't overclock above stock but it never gave me any problems. the Asus strix has been a nightmare..

first one would only run at 750Mhz on the core even in 3 machines!! 2nd one the fan died within 2 week's the 3rd one had memory issues plus a noisy fan.. this one the fan seems to be a little noisy but again ive only had it 3 weeks but I don't trust it after the bad luck ive had so far..

Should be 10-15% faster or so.

1060 is maybe 1-2% slower than a GTX 980. of course, all depending on which model achieves which boost clock exactly. But it's similar fast~.

But the 1060 has 6gb Vram, instead 3.5 gb. so, if you can jump up to a 1060 without spending too much, go for it.

Definitely go for the 1060. If its in your budget it will be a worthwhile upgrade. :D

1060 all the way, I dont think I could recommend anyone a 4gb card while calling it future proof (more so when its only 3.5gb)

The designs look better, lower power use, better fps.

Its the card i want to put in my first build. (Rip no money, no pc master race)

I hope ive convinced you enough
