So I have 200Mbps internet plan by Comcast, and I am only getting 100 Mbps.

I switched my router and modem three times, and now I have NETGEAR R6220 and ARRIS SB183, and still, I am only getting 100 Mbps.

The CS at Comcast said things are ok at their end, and they wanted to book a tech support, but the last support said everything is fine and charged me.

I think they are just forcing me to buy their 10 dollars per month modem/router thing or I will be bottlenecked.

Should I comply and just get their thing, or should I insist on using my own gear. If so, what should I do in order to get the full potential out of my plan?

Does your router have QoS on? If it does, and its set to the old 100mbps speed, no one client on your network will ever get allotted more than 100mbps until you tell QoS "You now have 200mbps of bandwidth to hand out".

Your modem supports 686mbps. More than enough. Comcast did the same thing to me, the low level rep was insistent I needed a new modem, and I kept saying I know the specs, I don't. When I got to a higher level rep who knew what they are talking about they laughed and said the other rep had no idea what she was talking about and i was correct about my modem.

I do think it's off.

Is there a tutorial on how to run iperf? :P

Not really. Do you have gigabit switches.

Is your computer gigabit?

Id setup anouther laptop connectedt to the ports on the router and run a iperf server(iperf -s on linux)

then use your computer and run iperf and the ip of that other system.

I am on a Ethernet-connected desktop with a Gigabit switch.

Are all the connectins running at gig? Look at the lights. Plug your laptop/desktop directly into the router and then speedtest. Check the link speed in task manager or control panel.

I found out what the problem is. The laptop which is directly connected to the router have 200 Mbps connection, so the wire connecting the router to my PC room have 100 Mbps bottleneck. So the issue now is how do i get a gigabit wire from living room to a external room?

If both of the devices are gig, then get a better cable. Look at a cat 6 cable.

But the cable is built inside the wall, and I am not willing to break down my wall just for a cable. Plus the cable must go across the whole house since my pc is located in an external room.

Sounds like you have an Ethernet interface hard codded or auto negotiating to E100. Look in your PC Ethernet adapter settings and try to hardcode for E1000 (GIGE). Also log into the router and verify if the port speed is set up for E1000 coming from your ISP and on the interface connecting to your PC. If you have a switch in the middle and can log into it do the same check.

Bring your PC next to your router and plug it in using the same cable as your laptop. If you get 200 mbps, the cable in the wall is your problem.

Yup, you are right. My port does have speed set to 100 Mbps. So how do I change it?

Update: I changed it to 1Gbps full duplex, but it is still showing 100 Mbps in property.

Make sure the port on your router that your PC is plugged into is set for Gige as well. Your PC could be auto negotiating the speed back down to E100.

Which interface is your PC plugged into. Change that interface to 1000M/Full. What is happening right now is you set up your PC for E1000  but its talking to your router which is set up for 100M and your PC decided that E100 is the right speed since the router is at E100.

What kind of router is it? We might be able to find a guide online. But if you can edit anywhere or go into a configuration mode within the GUI that would be the first step.

Its netgear R6220. I am looking for a tutorial now.

I just read that you might not be able to hard code the router because of some GUI limitations. However the ports are set up for auto negotiation so it should pick up that your PCs NIC is set for Gige and switch its port speed. Try plugging it into another port of the router and see if that port comes up as Gige full. Just curious is your PC directly plugged into the router or do you have a switch in between?

IDK about the switch, but my PC is not directly plugged into the router. The ethernet goes into my wall and out in my computer room. I do think something is the wall went wrong cuz I get 200 Mbps when I plug it directly into the router.
