ah, my first bass was a Rogue LX200B (a budget left handed bass)
as im a lefty, selections were limited, but i found this bass for $120.00 usd! so i gave it a shot!
Had it for 4 years now, still going strong. It plays like a $300 bass.
the rogue series has some good budget basses for intro bass guitars.
THEN I UPGRADED THE PASSIVE PICKUPS.
BEST DECISION EVER!.
All the best if you haven't chosen one already! and remember, bass isn't just another instrument, its a lifestyle.

Just picked it up. Brand new. In box. Plastic coating still on pick guard. Beautiful. Could not play yet, had to go to work. But soon I'll play it. I tested it and it works, but didn't have time to tune.

First things to check now: relief, action, strings condition and pickup height. There is some good info from Fender here, which are a general rule but actual action and pickup height are a bit more influenced by your play style (for example, I like very low action and high pickups)

I might bring it to a place to have proper set up.

But here it is with my "amp"

Is that PA stuff? It should work just right, granted that is goes lower than 100Hz with a decent response

Yeah. Uses a JBL 2226h, a pretty legendary driver.

Mmmmmh

Given the specs, it should be good enough, but the response doesn't go very high and you may get a big dip in the upper mids and the lower range of treble (plus a spike on treble given by the tweeter). Moreover I don't know how well it will respond to slap.

Bass cabs are mostly fullrange from 40Hz to 10-15Khz, you'll get better results with a dedicated bass rig; however it will definitely work, and might be better than what I'm thinking. However these are mostly bass-nerd problems for now, I remember having really shit sound at the beginning but I liked it lol

I disconnected the tweeter, made an aufull buz whenever plucking a note.

Seems to work fine and highs seem fine

Well AFAIK the JBL 2226h specs are indicating 1.2 KHz for highest recommended crossover... so it means its range is quite small lol

That's a great speaker but it's probably not suited for standalone bass playing. That's more than nothing, obviously, but give a try to some amps in a shop when you have time, even if you don't want to spend, just to get an idea of the difference. There are lots of good amps and cabs out there, it's getting easier to get a good product in this regards.

Yeah I guess. Sound fine to me though. I was testing out with the eq, look like bass only goes up to about 1kHz anyway...

You can notice difference in bass tone even at 10+ KHz, and a good chunk of the sound which emerges from the mix is actually made of low and high mids

With time you'll start to hear tone differences, and then you will start getting some gear acquisition syndrome  lol

After that learn how to do it by yourself, you will have to do adjustments when temperature changes or when you replace strings (well, at least it's the less expensive way)

what?

Standard 4-strings bass tuning is EADG. Isn't cello using CGDA? That means you are putting too much tension on the neck, if you're using standard strings

I seriously advice you to tune it EADG, considering the fact that practically every song needs the E string (and ADGC tuned basses are only used by skilled bassists in rare cases, mostly for solos)

Nah, I got different strings. Its tuned in 5ths, C being the lowest.

It can go lower than a regular bass, and higher.

So its not a fourth higher for each, it starts out at a C lower than the E, and goes to a A higher than the G.

Well, it depends from what you are going to play. That's a kinda strange tuning for a bass, you may encounter some difficulties for most songs in the beginning

Well for now its easier than a regular tuned bass.

Not sure whats best. Just looking to get into electric bass, I play cello now, so shouldent be too hard.
Will be using a cabinet I have on hand with a JBL 2226h and a yamaha pa amp/mixer.

Thoughts?

Wow then don't waste time with a regular bass go for a fretless instead. It just sounds way better and can still produce most of you normal bass lines anyways.

Check www.rondomusic.com for some reasonably priced fretless and fretted basses too.
